ShelterBox Expands Reach in Syrian Refugee Crisis, Response Teams En Route to Jordan

International disaster relief organization, ShelterBox, is en route to Jordan after the government released an urgent appeal for aid as an ?unprecedented? amount of Syrian refugees continue to enter the country.

Sarasota, FL (PRWEB) January 25, 2013

International disaster relief organization, ShelterBox, is en route to Jordan after the government released an urgent appeal for aid as an ?unprecedented? amount of Syrian refugees continue to enter the country.

ShelterBox responds following disasters such as earthquake, flood, tsunami, hurricane, cyclone or conflict by delivering boxes of aid. Each box contains a disaster relief tent, stove, water filtration system, blankets and other items necessary to help families live independently and with dignity in the months following disaster.

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh released a statement Thursday, requesting international aid after 20,000 Syrians crossed into the country in a single week. Judeh described the influx as ?unprecedented, larger than any other time in the last two years.?

In response to the country?s appeal, members of the highly trained ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) are en route to Jordan to assess the need for emergency shelter and other aid.

Although ShelterBox had prepositioned its aid with the Jordanian Red Crescent in December 2012, the need for additional emergency shelter and supplies is imminent.

ShelterBox first responded to the Syrian refugee crisis in October 2012, by delivering 500 boxes of winterized aid to the Domiz refugee camp in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. By December 2012, ShelterBox aid was also distributed in Syria, to a total of 710 families living families living in the Al-Salameh camp near the Turkey border.

An additional SRT is currently in Lebanon, awaiting the arrival of ShelterBoxes and assessing the need for more, in response to the Lebanese government?s request for aid earlier this month.

ShelterBox is also responding to the typhoon in the Philippines, bushfires in Australia and flooding in Nigeria.

Dems, GOP may be near end of filibuster dispute

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senators may be nearing an end to their partisan dispute over curbing unlimited delays called filibusters.

Whatever the resolution, it probably won't require filibustering senators to debate on the Senate floor until exhaustion, like the actor Jimmy Stewart did in the movie "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington."

Senate aides say lawmakers could compromise as soon as Thursday on modest limits on filibusters, which a party in the minority uses to kill legislation. If no deal is reached, Democrats may push a package of changes that would place mild restraints on the practice.

Some newer Democratic senators want to require filibustering lawmakers to talk continuously as Stewart did in the 1939 film. But No. 2 Senate Democratic leader Dick Durbin says Democrats lack the votes for that aggressive change.

No, You Probably Won't See a Bigger iPhone Any Time Soon

Apple CEO Tim Cook was just asked about Apple's plans regarding larger-screened devices, like the Galaxy Note. Here's how he answered: "Without sacrificing the one-handed ease of use, we've put a lot of thought into screen size, and we believe we've picked the right one." Translation? Nope, not happening. Israel goes to polls, set to re-elect Netanyahu

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israelis voted on Tuesday in an election that is expected to hand hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a third term, opening the way for a showdown with Iran and bolstering opponents of Palestinian statehood.

However, Netanyahu's own Likud party, running alongside the ultra-nationalist Yisrael Beitenu group, looks set to have fewer seats than in the previous parliament, with opinion polls showing a surge in support for the far-right Jewish Home party.

Political sources said Netanyahu, concerned by his apparent fall in popularity, might approach center-left parties after the ballot in an effort to broaden his coalition and present a more moderate face to Washington and other concerned allies.

"We want Israel to succeed, we vote Likud-Beitenu ... The bigger it is, the more Israel will succeed," Netanyahu said after voting alongside his wife and two sons.

Some 5.66 million Israelis are eligible to cast a ballot, with polling stations closing at 10 p.m.. Full results are due by Wednesday morning, opening the way for coalition talks that could take several weeks.

By 2 p.m., the Israeli election committee said turnout was 38.3 percent, up from 34 percent at the same time in 2009 and the highest level since 1999. Ahead of the ballot, analysts had speculated that high turnout would benefit center-left parties that have sometimes struggled to motivate their voter base.

The lackluster election campaign failed to focus on any single issue and with a Netanyahu victory predicted by every opinion poll, the two main political blocs seemed to spend more time on internal feuding than confronting each other.

"There is a king sitting on the throne in Israel and I wanted to dethrone him, but it looks like that won't happen," said Yehudit Shimshi, a retired teacher voting in central Israel in balmy winter weather that drew out the electorate.

No Israeli party has ever secured an absolute majority, meaning that Netanyahu, who says that dealing with Iran's nuclear ambitions is his top priority, will have to bring various allies on board to control the 120-seat Knesset.

The former commando has traditionally looked to religious, conservative parties for backing and is widely expected to seek out the surprise star of the campaign, self-made millionaire Naftali Bennett, who heads the Jewish Home party.

Bennett has ruled out any peace pact with the Palestinians and calls for the annexation of much of the occupied West Bank.

His youthful dynamism has struck a chord amongst Israelis, disillusioned after years of failed peace initiatives, and has eroded Netanyahu's support base.

The Likud has also shifted further right in recent months, with hardline candidates who reject the so-called two-state solution dominating the top of the party list.

"TRENDY PARTIES"

Surveys suggest Bennett may take up to 14 seats, many at the expense of Likud-Beitenu, which was projected to win 32 in the last round of opinion polls published on Friday - 10 less than the two parties won in 2009 when they ran separate lists.

Acknowledging the threat, Netanyahu's son Yair urged young Israelis not to abandon the old, established Likud.

"Even if there are more trendy parties, there is one party that has a proven record," he said on Tuesday.

Amongst the new parties standing for the first time in an election were Yesh Atid (There is a Future), a centrist group led by former television host Yair Lapid, seen winning 13 seats.

"All our lives we voted Likud, but today we voted for Lapid because we want a different coalition," said Ahuva Heled, 55, a retired teacher voting with her husband north of Tel Aviv.

Lapid has not ruled out joining a Netanyahu cabinet, but is pushing hard for ultra-Orthodox Jews to do military service - a demand fiercely rejected by some allies of the prime minister.

Israel's main opposition party, Labour, which is seen capturing up to 17 seats, has already ruled out a repeat of 2009, when it initially hooked up with Netanyahu, promising to promote peace negotiations with the Palestinians.

U.S.-brokered talks collapsed just a month after they started in 2010 following a row over settlement building, and have lain in ruins ever since. Netanyahu blamed the Palestinians for the failure and says his door remains open to discussions.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says he won't return to the table unless there is a halt to settlement construction.

That looks unlikely, with Netanyahu approving some 11,000 settler homes in December alone, causing further strains to his already notoriously difficult relations with U.S. President Barack Obama, who was sworn in for a second term on Monday.

IRAN THREAT

Tuesday's vote is the first in Israel since Arab uprisings swept the region two years ago, reshaping the Middle East.

Netanyahu has said the turbulence - which has brought Islamist governments to power in several countries long ruled by secularist autocrats, including neighboring Egypt - shows the importance of strengthening national security.

If he wins on Tuesday, he will seek to put Iran back to the top of the global agenda. Netanyahu has said he will not let Tehran enrich enough uranium to make a single nuclear bomb - a threshold Israeli experts say could arrive as early as mid-2013.

Iran denies it is planning to build the bomb, and says Israel, widely believed to have the only nuclear arsenal in the Middle East, is the biggest threat to the region.

The issue has barely registered during the election campaign, with a poll in Haaretz newspaper on Friday saying 47 percent of Israelis thought social and economic issues were the most pressing concern, against just 10 percent who cited Iran.

One of the first problems to face the next government, which is unlikely to take power before the middle of next month at the earliest, is the stuttering economy.

Data last week showed the budget deficit rose to 4.2 percent of gross domestic product in 2012, double the original estimate, meaning spending cuts and tax hikes look certain.

Freret Business Robbed Supports Private Security Patrols | WGNO

Another Uptown neighborhood is planning to join the ranks of communities with private security patrols.

Residents of the Freret Community met Tuesday night to further discuss ways of keeping their neighborhood safe.

Freret neighbors are enjoying rebirth and renewal; exciting new neighbors, and thriving new businesses.

It?s why neighborhood leaders gathered to talk about ways to keep the area safe.

Newly elected City Councilwoman LaToya Cantrell was there.

?Residents are the best experts on their neighborhood and so I?m here to listen and really get to work in a timely fashion, but making sure we manage our level of expectations,?? Cantrell said.

At Tuesday night?s meeting, one of several key issues discussed was creating a security district.

Dat DogThe need was underscored last month when an employee at the popular eatery, Dat Dog was shot during a robbery on Freret Street.

Supporters of the proposed security district believe private security patrols could help reduce crime.

?I don?t think NOPD can do it by themselves, community leader Dean Gancarz-Dabies said. ?I just think it?s too vast a neighborhood and they?ve got too few resources. I think they do a great job but anything extra could help.?

?The most important thing is to have a physical presence,? Constantine Georges said.

Business owner Constantine Georges says along with strengthening the neighborhood watch, security patrols will further deter crime.

?Someone see?s patrols regularly, if you?re a criminal you?ll probably go to another area,? Georges said.

And that?s how Michael Kasui sees it.

He?s opening a new sandwich shop on Freret Street next month.

He supports the idea of private security patrols.

?If that makes people feel safe and happier about coming down here and spending their money I?m all for it,? Kasui said.

The proposed security patrols are still in the developmental stages.

The issue won?t come to a vote until fall.

There will be further discussion at the next monthly meeting.

Olympus intros upgraded Stylus Tough TG2, TG830 and TG630 rugged cameras

Olympus knows many of us will be jonesing for a rugged camera once the weather warms up, and it's more than happy to deliver with a trio of refreshed Stylus Tough point-and-shoots. The TG-2 iHS flagship is all about going closer and deeper than before: it preserves the 12-megapixel CMOS sensor, 25-100mm equivalent f/2.0 lens and 1080p video of its predecessor, but introduces a new Microscopic Macro mode that Olympus claims can provide extreme detail from as little as 1cm (0.4 inches) away. The body's waterproofing is also resilient enough to survive at a deeper 50 feet, just in case the TG-1 isn't quite a match for that upcoming reef expedition. The TG-2 will arrive in March, and it should undercut its predecessor's original asking price at $380.

Those who aren't quite so committed to rough-and-tumble photography still get a few updates of their own. The TG-830 iHS adds geolocation to the TG-820's formula with both GPS and an electronic compass to show the way; its 16-megapixel CMOS sensor is also new, although we're more interested in a newfound option to shoot stills while recording video. At the entry level, the TG-630 iHS is a close cousin of the recent TG-625, adding a front metal plate to the 12-megapixel model we know. The two will ship alongside their bigger sibling in March with respective prices of $280 for the TG-830 and $200 for the TG-630.

Polaroid confirms iM1836 mirrorless with Android, adds three more cameras

Polaroid makes its Androidbased mirrorless camera official, adds two cameras and a camcorder to the mix

Polaroid left little doubt that it was launching its Android-based, interchangeable lens camera at CES, and sure enough, it's here: meet the iM1836. It mates an 18.1-megapixel, 1080p video-capable mirrorless body with Android (which we now know to be Android 4.1) to quickly share imagery with social networks over WiFi, or directly to other devices through Bluetooth. Its 3.5-inch display won't put the Galaxy Camera's 4.8-inch panel to shame, but Polaroid is no doubt counting on the ability to swap optics (which includes Micro Four Thirds lenses, through an optional adapter) and a pop-up flash to clinch a sale. The iM1836 should arrive in the first quarter at a $399 price, with a 10-30mm lens included -- uncommonly cheap for a camera that could potentially outshoot its Nikon and Samsung opponents.

That's not the only camera in the Polaroid brand's 2013 lineup, however. Non-Android parallels to the iM1836 are coming with both WiFi ( iM1232W, $349) and without (iM1030, $299) for cost-conscious photographers; those who don't mind a fixed-in-place lens can get the iS2433, a $199 bridge camera with a 24x (25-600mm equivalent) lens, a 16-megapixel backlit Sony CMOS sensor and a 3-inch LCD. One camcorder, the iD975, is joining the fray with 1080p video, 16-megapixel stills, a 3-inch touchscreen and a video-in-video mode that shows the person recording video along with the main footage. Polaroid hasn't provided launch dates for its more conventional shooters.

Sony Xperia Z: Water-resistant phone is splashy

11 hrs.

To say Xperia Z is "waterproof" may be pushing it: You can't take it scuba diving. But you can dump an entire bottle of water on it, and I'd lay odds it would do better than any iPhone when falling into a toilet for a second or two.

And that's not the most impressive thing about the new flagship Android phone from Sony. With a 13-megapixel camera, and a quad-core Qualcomm?Snapdragon S4 Pro?processor, and a 5-inch full-1080p "reality" display, yeah, it's got a lot to brag about. Not to mention the fact that it's only 7.9 millimeters thick, and?made of two slabs of sturdy, tempered glass. It's quite the machine.

I played around with one tonight, and it really moves fast. Its photo album can fly through month after month, year after year, at a blinding pace, and when you shoot, it uses intelligent-auto settings, along with facial-recognition, for nice sharp pictures on the fly. I especially liked how using the flash would create an image that doesn't look like your subject is being strobe tortured. I also liked that?the high dynamic range was always on for more balanced shots in weird lighting conditions ? unless you turn it off.

In addition to that water?resistance, it also resists dust. It will run Android 4.1?Jelly Bean (but not Android 4.2 Jelly Bean). I'm a little nervous about the unreported battery life, though the press release does mention a "stamina" mode that "can?improve standby time?by four times or more by automatically shutting down battery-draining apps?whenever the screen is off and starting them up again when the screen is back on." Good news there, maybe.?

Perhaps its crowning charm is its use of near-field communication ? of late, a technology generally associated with mobile payments ? to send music to speakers, photos to hard drives, and video to TVs, with a simple, wireless, magical little tap. It's a neat touch.

So what's wrong with it? No carrier. No price. No specific?U.S. release date announced ? just a global launch promised in the first quarter of 2013. Something tells me it may be a while before this phone turns up on Verizon's doorstep, let alone yours.

Businesses Added 215000 New Jobs in December - Milwaukee ...

Written by admin ? // January 5, 2013 ? // 0 Comments

by Frederick H. Lowe, The NorthStar News & Analysis
The nation?s businesses added 215,000 jobs in December, but African Americans won?t know until Friday whether the higher job numbers reduced the nation?s black unemployment rate.
Automatic Data Processing and Moody?s Analytics said on Thursday in their ADP National Employment Report for December that small businesses added 25,000 jobs; medium businesses added 102,000 jobs and large companies added 87,000 jobs.
Automatic Data Processing, a Roseland, N.J.-based payroll processor, defined small business as employing 20 to 49 workers. A medium-sized company employs 50 to 499 workers, and a large company employs 500 to more than 1,000 workers.
By sector, service providers added 187,000 jobs in December, compared with the goods producers that added 28,000 jobs.
The construction industry added 39,000 jobs; trade/transportation/utilities added 53,000 jobs; financial services added 14,000 jobs and professional-business services added 37,000 jobs. Manufacturing, however, lost 11,000 jobs.
Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody?s Analytics, said the devastation along the East Coast caused by Hurricane Sandy boosted the construction industry.
?The job market held firm in December despite the intensifying fiscal cliff negotiations in Washington. Businesses even became somewhat more aggressive in hiring at year end,? Zandi said. Carlos A. Rodriguez, president and CEO of ADP, said businesses have added 1.7 million jobs in the past year and that December?s jobs growth was the largest since February 2012.
ADP and Moody?s Analytics publishes its jobs report the day before the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics releases its closely watched jobs and employment report.
ADP?s and BLS? jobs numbers almost never match, and economists place more weight with BLS because they understand how officials reached their conclusions.
The BLS, however, will show whether December?s growth in jobs reduced the nation?s black unemployment rate, which was a seasonally adjusted 13.2 percent in November, compared with 6.2 percent for whites and 10 percent for Hispanics.
The jobless rate for black men 20 years old and older was 13 percent in November, and for black women in the same age group, it was 11.4 percent.
