NASA crashes moon spacecrafts ? on purpose

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? A pair of NASA spacecraft tumbled out of orbit around the moon and crashed back-to-back into the surface on Monday, ending a mission that peered into the lunar interior.

Engineers commanded the twin spacecraft, Ebb and Flow, to fire their engines and burn their remaining fuel. Ebb plunged first, slamming into a mountain near the moon's north pole. Its twin, Flow, followed about a half minute later and aimed for the same target.

By design, the final resting place was far away from the Apollo landing sites and other historical spots on the moon.

After the double impacts, mission chief scientist Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said the spot has been named after team member Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, who died earlier this year.

"It's really cool to know that when you look up now at the moon there's this little corner of the moon that's named after Sally," said Ride's sister, Rev. Bear Ride, adding that she hoped schoolchildren will be inspired.

Since the crash site was in darkness, the final act was not visible from Earth. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter circling the moon will pass over the mountain and attempt to photograph the skid marks left by the washing machine sized-spacecraft as they hit the surface at 3,800 mph.

After rocketing off the launch pad in September 2011, Ebb and Flow took a roundabout journey to the moon, arriving over the New Year's holiday on a gravity-mapping mission.

More than 100 missions have been flung to Earth's nearest neighbor since the dawn of the Space Age including NASA's six Apollo moon landings that put 12 astronauts on the surface.

The demise of Ebb and Flow comes on the same month as the 40th launch anniversary of Apollo 17, the last manned mission to the moon.

Ebb and Flow focused exclusively on measuring the moon's lumpy gravity field in a bid to learn more about its interior and early history. After flying in formation for months, they produced the most detailed gravity maps of any body in the solar system.

Secrets long held by the moon are spilling out. Ebb and Flow discovered that the lunar crust is much thinner than scientists had imagined. And it was severely battered by asteroids and comets in the early years of the solar system ? more than previously realized.

Data so far also appeared to quash the theory that Earth once had two moons that collided and melded into the one we see today.

Besides a scientific return, the mission allowed students to take their own pictures of craters and other lunar features as part of collaboration with a science education company founded by Ride, who died in July of pancreatic cancer at age 61.

Scientists expect to sift through data from the $487 million mission for years.

Obtaining precise gravity calculations required the twins to circle low over the moon, which consumes a lot of fuel. During the primary mission, they flew about 35 miles above the lunar surface. After getting bonus data-collecting time, they lowered their altitude to 14 miles above the surface.

With their fuel tanks almost on empty, NASA devised a controlled crash to avoid contacting any of the treasured sites on the moon. Mission control at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory applauded when controllers lost signal from the spacecraft.

The last time the space agency intentionally fired manmade objects at the moon was in 2009, but it was for the sake of science. The crash was a public relations dud ? spectators barely saw a faint flash ? but the experiment proved that the moon contained water.

Victims' list: Portraits begin to emerge

Many of the young survivors of Friday's shootings will now be forced to live with emotional scars for much of their lives. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

NBC's Matt Lauer talks with members of the Sandy Hook Elementary staff about Friday's tragic shootings.

By NBC News staff

Updated at 10 p.m. ET: Among the 28 who died in the Connecticut school shooting in Newtown, Conn. were six teachers -- all women -- and 20 children, ages 6 and 7. The two others who died in the shooting were the alleged gunman and his mother. ?

The children had been shot multiple times, according to the Connecticut medical examiner. Of the 20 slain, eight were boys and 12 were girls. Their stories began to emerge Saturday after their names were released to the public.?

---

Those killed, in alphabetical order, and their ages:?

Adults:

Dawn Hochsprung, 47, Sandy Hook Elementary principal
When shots rang out Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, Principal Dawn Hochsprung ran from a room where she was meeting with a parent and other staff members, school occupational therapist Diane Day told the Wall Street Journal.

She never returned.

Hochsprung, 47, has been described as fun and lighthearted, someone who maintained an active Twitter feed that noted successes and various events at school.

?Sandy Hook hosted district admins for instructional rounds today,? she tweeted on Nov. 29. ?Amazing visit showcased deep learning!?

?She was not the kind of principal I remembered as a kid,? Diane Licata, the mother of a first- and second-grader at Sandy Hook, told The New York Times. ?She really reached out to the students and made them feel comfortable with her.?

Hoschsprung was married with a high-school age son, according to the WSJ.

Sandy Hook Elementary principal Dawn Hochsprung died in the attack after reportedly running toward the gunfire to protect her students. TODAY's Erica Hill reports, and Savannah Guthrie talks with two men who knew her.

Mary Sherlach, 56, school psychologist
Mary Sherlach had worked at Sandy Hook Elementary since 1994 and was known as a fixture at the school, according to the Connecticut Post.

She was the wife of Bill Sherlach, a financial consultant, and mother to two adult daughters, Maura and Katie. The Sherlaches were looking forward to retirement, which they had planned to spend on Owasco Lake, one of New York's Finger Lakes, Newtown Patch reported. Mary Sherlach was a year from retiring.

Eric Schwartz, Sherlach?s son-in-law, told the Connecticut Post that he and his wife immediately drove to Connecticut when they heard on the news that the school psychologist had been killed.

Schwartz described his mother-in-law as sharp, opinionated and an avid Miami Dolphins fan.

As the news trickled out about the shooting, Schwartz told Patch: ?It was a really helpless feeling. For about an hour, you try to say, ?They got it wrong, they got it wrong.??

Victoria Soto, 27, first-grade teacher
As the shooter entered Room 10, a first-grade classroom, teacher Vicki Leigh Soto tried to shield her students, her cousin Jim Wiltsie told the Wall Street Journal.

"That is how she was found. Huddled with her children," Wiltsie said.

Soto had taught for five years and was known by students as silly and loving. One student, Jacob Riley, told the Daily Mail that she chewed gum in class, typically uncommon for school teachers.

A Tumblr user named Joseph wrote that he was close with Soto, with whom he discussed teaching.

?I talked to Vicki Tuesday and she told me that she loved her 16 angels and never wanted to let them go,? he wrote.

On her teacher's bio, Soto wrote: "In my free time I love to spend time with black lab Roxie. I love spending time with my brother, sisters and cousins. I love to spend time reading books on the beach soaking?up the sun. ?I also love flamingos and the New York Yankees."

Anne Marie Murphy, 52, special education teacher
Anne Marie Murphy, the sixth of seven children, was described by her 86-year-old father, Hugh McGowan, as ?witty? and ?hardworking,? according to New York Newsday.

Her mother, Alice McGowan, 86, described her as ?a good soul.?

On Friday, her parents waited to hear from their daughter, but as the hours passed, they knew something was amiss. When her mother got the news, she told Newsday that she grabbed her rosary and cried.

?A first responder said she was a hero,? Murphy's father said.

Lauren Rousseau, 30, permanent substitute teacher
Lauren Rousseau was having the best year of her life.

She had a boyfriend, Tony Lusardi III, The Danbury News-Times reported. Her mother, Teresa Rousseau, is a copyeditor at the newspaper. After years of substitute teaching, she landed a permanent substitute teaching position at Sandy Hook. ?

?It was the best year of her life,? Teresa Rousseau said, according to the News-Times.

She grew up in Danbury and lived with her mother and her mother?s partner.

On Friday night, Rousseau had planned to see the movie, The Hobbit, according to the News-Times. In preparation, she had made cupcakes with pictures of the actors in the movie topping each one.

Nancy Lanza, 52, mother of gunman
Investigators believe that Adam Lanza, the alleged gunman, shot his mother at her home near Sandy Hook Elementary before driving to the school and killing 26 others.

Nancy Lanza was social, friends and neighbors told The New York Times, and she wasn?t shy about discussing her gun collection.

?She had several different guns,? Dan Holmes, owner of Holmes Fine Gardens, told The New York Times. ?She would go target shooting with her kids.?

In 2008, Lanza?s ex-husband, Peter John Lanza, filed for divorce, court records show. Lanza?s address at the time was listed as Sandy Hook. Adam Lanza would have been about 16-years-old at the time. Peter John Lanza is listed as living in Stamford, Conn. ?

Rachel Davino was 29.

Children:

Charlotte Bacon was 6. Charlotte, who had long curly, red hair, had begged her mother for a new outfit she was supposed to receive, her uncle told ?Newsday. Her mother relented on Friday and allowed her to wear the outfit: a pink dress and boots.

Daniel Barden was 7.

Olivia Engel was 6.

Josephine Gay was 7.

Ana Marquez-Greene was 6. She was the daughter of American jazz saxophonist Jimmy Greene, and the granddaughter of Jorge Marquez, the mayor of Maunabo, Puerto Rico. She was close with her brother, 9-year-old Isaias, who was also at Sandy Hook Elementary on Friday.

Jimmy Green named a song from his 2009 disc for his daughter, Ana Grace, the Ottawa Citizen noted.

In a statement posted by the Citizen, Greene thanked friends for their prayers and words of support: ?As we work through this nightmare, we?re reminded how much we?re loved and supported on this earth and by our Father in heaven. As much as she?s needed here and missed by her mother, brother and me, Ana beat us all to paradise. I love you sweetie girl.?

Read more at NBC Latino

Ana?s grandmother, Elba Iris Marquez, told the Nuevo Dia: ?I want to believe this is not really happening to me.? The newspaper said she was drowned in grief.

Dylan Hockley was 6.

Madeleine F. Hsu was 6.

Catherine V. Hubbard was 6.

Chase Kowalski was 7.

Jesse Lewis was 6.

James Mattioli was 6.

Grace McDonnell was 7.

Emilie Parker was 6. Her father, Robbie Parker, described his daughter as loving and creative.

?My daughter Emilie would be one of the first ones to be standing and giving her love and support to all those victims, because that?s the kind of person she is, not because of any kind of parenting my wife and I could have done but because those are the gifts that were given to her by our heavenly Father,? Robbie Parker said. ?

He said Emilie was bright, creative and very loving. She carried around pencils and crayons and when people were sad, she would draw them a picture or write them a note. Recently, she dropped a card into the casket of her grandfather, who also died tragically, Robbie Parker said.

Jack Pinto was 6.

Noah Pozner was 6. He was the youngest of the victims, having turned 6 last month. His twin sister survived the shooting. He also had an 8-year-old sister at the school, according to Newsday.

Rabbi Shaul Praver tended to his mother, Veronika Pozner.

?She said that she didn?t know how she was going to go on, and we encouraged her to focus on her other four children that need her and not to try to plan out the rest of her life, just take a deep breath right now,? Praver said, according to forward.com.

Arthur Pozner, the boy?s uncle, told Newsday that Noah was very mature.

?Very well brought up. Extremely bright. Extremely bright,? he said.

Caroline Previdi was 6.

Jessica Rekos was 6.

Avielle Richman was 6.

Benjamin Wheeler was 6.

Allison N. Wyatt was 6.

How to Learn Business to Business Networking Skills From the ...

Are you a small business owner who goes to networking events with some hesitation because you don?t want to run into network marketers? Or maybe you don?t go at all because you?ve been hit up for business by someone in direct sales? Instead of avoiding networking, why not take the radical step of seeking out network marketers and the people who teach them?

If you?re a small business owner, perhaps with a local retail store, an insurance company or even a real estate business, you know that networking is an important part of your marketing and sales plan. It?s probably not your main source of business, but it?s a skill and a process that can enhance the rest of what you do. For a network marketer, it?s probably the only way they are going to get business.

Yes, there are plenty of people in the business who aren?t subtle, who go for the sale and turn off a lot of people. But this is an industry that has survived and thrived, turning regular people into millionaires or at least someone who makes a decent living doing it. There?s a lot to learn from those who are successful and who are teaching people in the industry.

One way to learn is to actually join a business yourself. Not to make a living, but to have access to the training they offer. Most of it is on the business model and the pay structure, but the bigger companies bring in heavy hitters to help their people. I?ve seen Jeff Olson present on the Slight Edge at no cost and then met him in person at the after party. Friends of mine who are serious in the business have seen Bob Burg, Les Brown and Brian Tracy speak and train.

Another way to learn is to find those in your area who have been successful in the long term in the business. You?ll have to look; they aren?t the ones pushing a business card at you. They are the people who help the hostess at business events, who are the linchpin in a referral group or leads club, and who volunteer with the chamber of commerce. They are true givers and their time, ideas and resources are yours for the asking.

You don?t have to be in the industry to benefit from it. Seek out and observe those who have built a business on their ability to develop long-term mutually beneficial relationships. Invest time with them and they will shorten your learning curve and help you take your business networking to a more profitable level.

iFOREX Daily- December 17, 2012 - TRADERBASE Forex Trading ...

The U.S. Dollar declined against most of the majors as Friday?s reports showed that Consumer Inflation dipped 0.3 percent, bringing the annualized rate down to 1.8 percent. According to economists, the data supported the Federal Reserve?s decision to buy $45 billion worth of Treasuries every month. And now that Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke delivered the central bank?s statement indicating it would leave interest rates close to zero while buying more assets, investors have shifted their attention back to they lawmakers who continue to grapple over a plan to avert the looming fiscal cliff. $607 billion in tax increases and reductions in spending are set to go into effect at the beginning of 2013. In the meantime, the Canadian Dollar fell against the U.S. currency as poor Manufacturing reports out of Canada and concerns about the Fiscal cliff increased demand for safe havens. However, it?s worth noting that the greenback remained under pressure following the release of lackluster Consumer Inflation data on Friday.

The Euro traded at the highest level since May against the U.S. Dollar and rose versus the remainder of its peers after the Euro-zone?s Finance Ministers came to a consensus to make the European Central Bank the overseer of the area?s banks. The Euro was buoyed by optimism that regional leaders are making strides towards resolving the debt crisis. E.U. Minister also announced that they would releasing another tranche of aid for Greece to the amount of 49.1 Billion Euros after Greece revealed its plan to re-purchase debt from private investors. The British Pound advanced against the U.S. Dollar subsequent to the release of lackluster U.S. Consumer Inflation figures, but it slipped versus the Euro after the Standard & Poor?s suggested it may cut the U.K.?s AAA rating over the next two years.

The Yen extended losses for a fifth consecutive week against the U.S. Dollar as investors anticipate that once Shinzo Abe, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, is deemed the winner of the December 16^th elections, he?ll pressure the Bank of Japan into implementing unlimited stimuli.

Lastly, the Australian Dollar traded at a three-month high versus the greenback as the Federal Reserve?s decision to buy $45 billion in Treasuries every month dampened appeal for the U.S. currency. The Aussie was also supported by a release which showed that China?s Manufacturing sector grew at the quickest pace in over one year this month. The New Zealand Dollar climbed to a fifteen-month high against the U.S. monetary unit as the announcement of soft Inflation figures supported the continuation of the Federal Reserve?s asset-purchasing program.

?

EUR/USD- ECB Will Oversee Lenders

The Euro climbed against the U.S. Dollar subsequent to reports which showed that the U.S. Manufacturing Purchasing Manager?s Index rose to 54.2 this month, a release which improved demand for high risk assets. The Euro remained strong as the Finance Ministers agreed to have the European Central Bank as the overseer of the region?s banks, and after data revealed that the E.U.?s PMI increased slightly from 46.2 to 46.3 in December. Other figures indicated that German Manufacturing PMI slipped from 46.8 to 46.3 and the area?s Consumer Price Index did not change from the previous annualized rate of 2.2 percent. Lastly, Eurostat announced that the number of employed individuals dipped by 0.2 percent.

?

GBP/USD- S & P Warns The U.K.

The British Pound rallied against the U.S. Dollar following the announcement of less than stellar U.S. Consumer Inflation figures which supported the Fed?s case for further monetary easing. The Sterling remained strong even after the Standard & Poor?s put the U.K. on notice warning that it may reduce its AAA rating in the next 2 years. In the days to come, the U.K. will report on Inflation; analysts believe a lower rate of inflation will prompt the Bank of England to expand its asset-purchasing program.

?

AUD/USD- Aussie Benefits From Chinese Data

Australia?s Dollar gained against the greenback on Friday as news the Fed intends to implement further easing dampened demand for the U.S. currency. The Aussie Dollar was also supported by data out of China which indicated that the Manufacturing activity rose at the quickest pace in over 12 months. According to official figures, HSBC Manufacturing PMI climbed from 50.5 to 50.9 in November. The better than expected metrics helped ease concerns about growth in the world?s second largest economy. Investors will pay close attention to the release of the Reserve Bank of Australia?s Monetary Policy Meeting Minutes due out this week.
