Morning Rush: FAITH ISN'T THE FLESH DOING BETTER

I guess as long as we live we will be tempted to conquer life through the flesh standards of accomplishment and success.

Faith truly challenges us to move into an entirely new zone.? The leader of that territory is the Holy Spirit; invisible, flexible, and known only by faith.

It would seem that the deepest desire for most is to be a better people.? The road to this victory is not in self-improvement nor in self-maintenance; but is to be found in a Person named Jesus.? Think it not strange that such an admonition, alone, seems nebulous.? Ah, welcome to the Spirit world!

No, when it comes to faith, the flesh?has a low?tolerance for the?vague.? We are a meat and potatoes kind of believer that wants understandable guidelines.? Yet, the Guide gave us Guidelines to lead us to the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen definition of FAITH.?

The Bible contains one story upon another of individuals too weak and sometimes too awkward for the task at hand to guide us to the God who can accomplish through us.? Abraham was assumed too old to father a child.? Joseph was betrayed and dumped in a pit only to arise as a national leader.? Moses begged off--at first--when God called him to do what could not be done (but did get done) in rescuing God's nation held captive.

The reason churches fail a community could be found by drawing people in only to admonish its members they can do better if they will just try harder.? The reason a church blesses a neighborhood is discovered when one surrenders his or her self-effort for the heroic trust in our active and invisible God.?

Faith isn't the flesh doing better.? It is the spirit of a person leaning into the Spirit of God trusting that He will do better with us than we would by our own steam.

For further evaluation of such a concept, I think you would thoroughly enjoy Sharon Hersh's The Last Addiction (Why Self-Help Is Not Enough).? You will be blessed.

Somalia: Al Shabaab militants abandon Kismayo after African Union attack

Al Shabaab militants have abandoned Kismayo in southern Somalia, a day after African Union troops launched an attack on the key port city.

The Associated Press reported that Kismayo residents awoke Saturday to find the Islamist militants had abandoned police and government headquarters in the city center, sparking a looting spree.

More from GlobalPost: Somalia gears up for final offensive against Al Shabaab

Kenyan and Somali forces with the AU mission on Friday launched a beach assault on Kismayo, while inland troops pushed toward the city,?the BBC reported.

Kismayo has been a stronghold for Al Shabaab, and an important source of funding for the group since it was forced out of Mogadishu in August 2011, the AP said.

The BBC said Al Shabaab had used Kismayo's port to bring in weapons. The group had funded itself largely by charging taxes on goods arriving at the port.

Al Shabaab announced it was leaving Kismayo via its Twitter account:

The Morning Orange: Baseball wafts (a bit) in the heart (Henderson's) of the Syracuse football season

Syracuse, N.Y. -- The Syracuse University football team is fully one-third of its way through the regular season. With Pittsburgh due in the Carrier Dome in six days, the start of the Orange?s Big East Conference campaign looms. There is much work to be done between now and the earning of any bowl-game berth.

But still . . .

Have you seen what?s going on in the American League? There are five playoff berths available in that thing, and there are just five games left for each of the contenders . . . and nothing has been decided.

Texas (92-65) . . . New York (91-66) . . . Baltimore (90-67) . . . Oakland (88-68) . . . Los Angeles (87-70) . . . Tampa Bay (86-71) . . . Detroit (84-73) . . . Chicago (83-74). On this last weekend of September, all eight of those towns -- and the AL clubs that play in them -- are still very much alive. Which means, if you recall what the St. Louis Cardinals did a year ago, that each is still in position to land in the World Series.

? MLB scoreboard, schedule | ? MLB standings

So, what does any of this have to do with Syracuse football? Perhaps only this: One of Doug Marrone?s assistants who has actually allowed himself an interest in something beyond Xs and Os is keeping tabs.

Uh huh. Donnie Henderson, SU?s defensive backs coach, is a baseball guy. And as he grew up in southern California playing the game with Ozzie Smith and Eddie Murray -- both of whom would eventually wend their way into the Baseball Hall of Fame -- perhaps he can?t be blamed.

So, he is a fan. And as he does work for a man, Marrone, who played baseball, himself, in high school and remains a devotee of the Yankees, he may be fairly well-placed in the college football universe.

?Oh, I?ll talk baseball any time,? Henderson will tell you. ?I love it.?

He?ll also confess to his admiration of that fella for whom the month we?re about to enter was so special.

?Reggie Jackson was my guy,? said Henderson. ?It was the demeanor. He always had the confidence. Reggie was a little outspoken, yeah. He walked with that swagger. He was labeled as ?Mr. October,? and he had to live with that. You?re ?Mr. October.? You go up against Billy Martin all the time. Who?s going to in? Yeah, he was my guy.?

Funny, but Jackson played for four of the teams still alive in the AL ? in order, the Athletics, Orioles, Yankees and Angels. So, his fingerprints, even if they've long since faded, might still be on this pennant race, if only poetically.

And so, who knows? Maybe that has made Henderson even more invested. Subliminally, if nothing else.

Russian NGOs in panic mode over proposed 'high treason' law

Russia's new definition of high treason, which is likely to pass, could apply to any behavior that undermines 'constitutional order, sovereignty, and territorial and state integrity' in authorities' eyes.

    By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / September 26, 2012

When the Kremlin-dominated State Duma passed a new law last summer requiring any "politically active" nongovernmental organization that receives any amount of outside funding to register as a "foreign agent," many people in Russia's broader NGO community became deeply alarmed.

    ' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
    ' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

    '; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Now, after the Duma unanimously passed ? on the first of three readings ? new amendments proposed by the Federal Security Service (FSB) that will extend the definition of "high treason" so that it can be applied to almost any Russian citizen who works with foreign organizations, they are in full panic mode.

The new terms, which seem almost certain to sail through the Duma in coming days and be signed into law by President Vladimir Putin, will mean that "treason" no longer refers only to a concrete crime, such as knowingly passing state secrets to a foreign power, but could apply to any behavior that undermines? "constitutional order, sovereignty, and territorial and state integrity" in the eyes of the authorities. Under the new terms, any person that discloses information the state considers a secret to any "foreign government or international, foreign organization," even if that person has no access to classified materials and didn't know it was a secret, may be accused of betraying their country and face a potential 20 years in prison. It is unclear when the law, if enacted, would come into effect.

"Though these amendments are not even passed yet, many people have already started to become more prudent in their contacts with foreigners," says Andrei Soldatov, editor on ?Agentura.ru, an online journal devoted to studying the security services, and coauthor of "The New Nobility," which details the return to power in Russia of the former Soviet KGB.

"The new definition of treason that's before the Duma is a direct Soviet legacy. Treason will no longer be about a specific crime, but more about what's in your heart, whether you're truly loyal, as determined by the authorities. I can't even understand how it might be used," says Mr. Soldatov.

"Now, not only the person who divulges a secret, but also the person who asked ? such as a journalist ? can be charged with treason. It's dangerously vague," he adds.

    Broadened definitions of espionage

Addressing the Duma last Friday, FSB deputy director Yury Gorbunov said that classic definitions of espionage and treason had to be broadened to include cooperation with international organizations, which might include NGOs and media groups, because the world has become more dangerous.

"We should include international organizations on the list of agents that can be charged with treason due to the fact that foreign intelligence agencies actively use them to camouflage their spying activity," Mr. Gorbunov said.

The proposed legislation follows the high-profile ejection of USAID from Russia last week after the Kremlin accused it of interfering with Russia's internal political processes.

In November, the new law requiring NGOs that have any level of political engagement and receive any amount of outside funding to register as "foreign agents" will come into effect.

    A chill on civil society?

The Kremlin almost certainly has just a few prominent organizations in its sights, including the grassroots election-monitoring network Golos, the global corruption watchdog Transparency International, and Russia's main human rights groups Memorial and the Moscow Helsinki Group.

Major Cable ISPs Challenge Xbox on its Own Turf with Cloud Gaming

On the cusp of cloud-gaming outfit OnLive going down in flames and evaporating, it appears that major ISPs are looking into their own cloud-gaming delivery services to players who use Internet-enabled devices such as smart TVs. According to a report in Bloomberg, AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc., and Time Warner Cable Inc. expect to start trails in cloud gaming services as early as later this year with wider deployments expected as early as 2013.

It?s suspected that this move might be a strategic maneuver against consoles such as Xbox, Wii, and PlayStation as these devices become less consoles and more Internet-connected devices that themselves rely on cloud-gaming services. In fact, the Xbox has long been seen as Microsoft?s stealth-offering to the living room cloud.

ISPs sending games to Internet-enabled TVs is essentially the opposite of Xbox?s gaming console seeking to bring TV and media programming into themselves via the Internet; but it falls into almost exactly the same markets. Also, looking at the free-to-play console coming from OUYA, there may be a great deal of new competition entering this market.

Although, it?s hard to see anyone actually toppling the three major consoles from their video game King of the Mountain.

In addition to AT&T, Verizon and Time Warner Cable, Comcast Corp. (CMCSA) and Cox Communications Inc. are also in talks to offer video-gaming services, the people said. They?re all looking to go beyond social games from Zynga Inc. (ZNGA) and casual games such as ?Tetris? and ?Solitaire,? with technology that can deliver the most advanced action games from top publishers such as Electronic Arts Inc. (EA)

For technology, the carriers are turning to startups such as Playcast Media Systems, CiiNOW Inc. and Agawi Inc., which provide software to speed delivery of real-time gaming. Executives at each of those companies acknowledged that they?re in talks with U.S. carriers, declining to say which ones.

According to the National Cable & Telecommunications Association Verizon had 4.47 million TV subscribers, while Cox had 4.66 million. This might actually generate a dent when it comes to Internet-enabled TV subscribers vs. people who happen to own a game console (which also have a deep penetration into the consumer market.)

The big difference is that people who might use their Internet-enabled TV for gaming will not be seeking the same type of games that gamers who go to consoles. As mentioned above, EA and Zynga might be major players in this new market with social and casual styled gaming?whereas players who go to Xbox and PlayStation often play games such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and the upcoming Black Ops 2?high graphics, massive action games that require local processing and would not play well over a cloud-gaming service.

Internet-enabled TVs and current streaming technology in the market?

With the loss of OnLive in the market, all that remains in the cloud-gaming is Gaikai?who just happen to have been bought by Sony, the developer of the PlayStation and numerous Internet-enabled TV products. Even if major ISPs open up their own market for cloud-gaming, they will have to contend with the primary rival to OnLive still persisting in that marketspace and hooked into a major manufacturer of SmartTV technology as well as someone who already does consoles.

The PlayStation may be an expensive venture, whereas a SmartTV might just come with a new TV anyway, but PS3 players have a wider variety to work with than someone who just gets their games and such via their cable or ISP to their Internet-enabled TV.

Of course, this does mean that both EA and Zynga will see a huge boost in audience by going through these major ISPs and cable companies in order to have their games pushed to Smart TVs; but it?s not a good time to write off consoles themselves, especially with Gaikai still pushing their advantage.

Deadly complication of stem cell transplants reduced in mice

Deadly complication of stem cell transplants reduced in mice [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 27-Sep-2012

Studying leukemia in mice, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have reduced a life-threatening complication of stem cell transplants, the only curative treatment when leukemia returns.

About 50 percent of leukemia patients who receive stem cells from another person develop graft-versus-host disease, a condition where donor immune cells attack the patient's own body. The main organs affected are the skin, liver and gut. Now, the scientists have shown they can redirect donor immune cells away from these vital organs. Steering immune cells away from healthy tissue also leaves more of them available for their intended purpose killing cancer cells.

"This is the first example of reducing graft-versus-host disease not by killing the T- cells, but simply by altering how they circulate and traffic," says John F. DiPersio, MD, PhD, the Virginia E. and Sam J. Golman Professor of Medicine. "Donor T-cells do good things in terms of eliminating the recipient's leukemia, but they can also attack normal tissues leading to death in a number of patients. The goal is to minimize graft-versus-host disease, while maintaining the therapeutic graft-versus-leukemia effect."

The study is now available online in Blood.

Working with mice, Jaebok Choi, PhD, research assistant professor of medicine, showed that eliminating or blocking a particular protein the interferon gamma receptor on donor T-cells makes them unable to migrate to critical organs such as the intestines but still leaves them completely capable of killing leukemia cells.

"The fact that blocking the interferon gamma receptor can redirect donor T-cells away from the gastrointestinal tract, at least in mice, is very exciting because graft-versus-host disease in the gut results in most of the deaths after stem cell transplant," DiPersio says. "People can tolerate graft-versus-host disease of the skin. But in the GI tract, it causes relentless diarrhea and severe infections due to gut bacteria leaking into the blood, which can result in severe toxicity, reduction in the quality of life or even death in some patients."

Long known to be involved in inflammation, the roles of interferon gamma, its receptor and their downstream signaling molecules are just beginning to be described in the context of graft-versus-host disease, says DiPersio, who treats patients at Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine.

The cascade begins when interferon gamma activates its receptor. The interferon gamma receptor then activates molecules known as JAK kinases, followed by STAT, and finally CXCR3. CXCR3 mediates the trafficking of donor T-cells to the GI tract and other target organs.

Since deleting the interferon gamma receptor from donor T-cells directs them away from target organs, the researchers asked whether they could produce the same beneficial effects by inhibiting some of the receptor's downstream signaling molecules. Indeed, Choi also found that knocking out CXCR3 reduces graft-versus- host disease, but not completely.

"There are probably additional downstream targets of interferon gamma receptor signaling other than JAKs, STATs and CXCR3 that are responsible for T-cell trafficking to the GI tract and other target organs," DiPersio says. "We're trying to figure out what those are."

To move their findings closer to possible use in humans, Choi and DiPersio also showed that they could mimic the protective effect of deleting the interferon gamma receptor with existing drugs that block JAK kinases. In this case, they tested two JAK inhibitors, one of which is currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat myelofibrosis, a pre-leukemic condition in which the bone marrow is replaced with fibrous tissue.

While they showed that JAK inhibitors are effective in redirecting donor T-cells away from target organs and reducing graft-versus-host disease in mice with leukemia, they have not yet tested whether these drugs also preserve the desired anti-leukemia effect.

"The proof-of-principle behind these experiments is the exciting part," DiPersio says. "If you can change where the T-cells go as opposed to killing them, you prevent the life-threatening complications and maintain the clinical benefit of the transplant."

Best constraint on mass of photons, using observations of super-massive black holes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? A global team of scientists, including a University of Mississippi physicist, has determined the best constraint on the mass of photons so far, using observations of super-massive black holes.

The research findings appear in the September issue of Physical Review Letters. "Black hole bombs and photon mass bounds" is co-authored by Emanuele Berti, UM assistant professor of physics and astronomy, along with fellow researchers Paolo Pani, Vitor Cardoso, Leonardo Gualtieri and Akihiro Ishibashi.

This paper details how the scientists, who work in Portugal, Italy, Japan and the U.S., found a way to use astrophysical observations to test a fundamental aspect of the Standard Model -- namely, that photons have no mass -- better than anyone before.

"The test works like this: if photons had a mass, they would trigger an instability that would spin down all black holes in the universe," Berti said. "But astronomers tell us that the gigantic, super-massive black holes at galactic centers are spinning, so this instability cannot be too strong.

"The mass of the photon, if it has a mass at all, must be extremely tiny."

"Ultralight photons with nonzero mass would produce a 'black hole bomb': a strong instability that would extract energy from the black hole very quickly," said Pani, the paper's lead author. "The very existence of such particles is constrained by the observation of spinning black holes. With this technique, we have succeeded in constraining the mass of the photon to unprecedented levels: the mass must be one hundred billion of billions times smaller than the present constraint on the neutrino mass, which is about two electron-volts."

The results of this study can be used to investigate the existence of new particles, such as those possibly contributing to the dark matter that is the subject of a search using the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva. CERN is the site where the breakthrough discovery of the Higgs boson was reported earlier this year.

"That discovery filled one of the most important gaps in our understanding of the standard model of particle physics, because it explains how particles get their mass," Gualtieri said. "However, not all particles have mass. Physics makes progress by testing every nook and cranny of our commonly accepted theories. So, if we believe that a particle has no mass, we'd better test this idea with precise experiments.

"Observations of super-massive black holes may provide new insights which are not accessible in laboratory experiments. This would certainly be exciting. Perhaps these new frontiers in astrophysics will give us a clearer understanding of the microscopic universe."

"Paolo, Vitor, Leonardo and I are all part of an IRSES Network on 'Numerical Relativity and High-Energy Physics' funded by the European Union," Berti said. "Paolo presented a talk on this work at the first meeting of our network that was held in Aveiro, Portugal in July. This network will be used in the next four years to strengthen our collaboration even further."

Pani, who received the Fubini Prize from the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics for the best Ph.D. thesis nationwide in 2011, is a post-doctoral researcher at Instituto Superior T?cnico in Lisbon, Portugal, supported by a European Marie Curie Fellowship.

"Paolo started working with us when he visited Ole Miss in 2007," Berti said. "We have been working together on this particular project since January 2012, and we have co-authored nine papers so far."

A post-doctorate researcher at UM before returning to his native Portugal, Cardoso is a professor at Instituto Superior Tecnico, where his group is supported by a prestigious European Research Council Starting Grant. Cardoso and Berti have published 37 papers together over the past decade.

"Gualtieri and I were both Ph.D. students under the supervision of Valeria Ferrari in Rome, Italy," Berti said. "We have also been collaborating for more than a decade. Leonardo is now a research professor ('ricercatore') in Rome."

Ishibashi works at the KEK Theory Center and at the Department of Physics of Kinki University in Japan, where physicists at the center are studying in great depth phenomena similar to the one described in the PRL paper.

This study was funded, in part, by National Science Foundation Grant No. PHY-0900735 and by CAREER Grant No. PHY-1055103.

Video: Obama cites education as an issue that unites the world

    >> appreciate it.

    >> i want to ask you about the strike in chicago. there was a leading reform advocate who said this is a new day for democrats, they're no longer kowtowing to the unions. is that how you see it?

    >> that's not how i see it. what i see is all across the country people want results and i'm a strong believer that the way to get results is to get everyone involved. it starts at home. parents have to parent and turn off the tv and video and make sure your kids turn off the video and do their home work and communicate with the teachers. teachers are striving in the classrooms and the school boards making sure the teachers have the resources and creativity to do their best. principals are leaders. i think what you saw in chicago for example was the fact that they had the shortest school day in the country or shortest school year. it was very important for mayor emanuel to say let's step up our game, and it was important for the teachers unions to say, let's make sure we're not blaming teachers for the big problems out there. let's make sure we got the resources . i'm glad it was resolved. ultimately performance, and making sure the kid doswell. i but i do think from the perspective of democrats, we can't just sit on the status quo or say that money's the only issue. reform is important also. that's been the benchmark we've used in my administration is to say we're going to give more money to those schools that are serious about reform , but we're not going to let people make excuses and suggest that it's just a money problem.

    >> mitt romney said that president obama has chosen his side in this fight, that you sided with the unions. at another time last spring he said he can't talk up reform while indulging in groups that block it.

    >> well, you know, i think governor romney and a number of folks try to politicize the issue and do a lot of teacher bashing. when i meet teachers all across the country, they're so devoted, so dedicated to their kids. and what we've tried to do is actually break through this left/right conservative liberal gridlock, and that's what my key reform 's been all about, the race to the top . what we've said to school districts is you've got to emphasize high accountability, high standardsing, make sure teachers know we're going to be paying attention to the national outcomes of kids but we're also going to be giving the resources the to the teachers, providing the support they need. some of the things we've done has not been popular with school teachers. i'm a big supporter of charter schools .

    >> one of the things mayor rahm emanuel fought for was that.

    >> the key is to work with teachers. when you look at what's happened in denver, for example, school district , teachers have embraced the idea of merit teachers who are doing a great job, but what is still a challenge and i think teachers have a legitimate gripe here is making sure the assessments are done properly, that it's not just based on standardized tests which often force schools to teach to the tests. and one of the reasons we have sought reforms to no child left behind , i think it had great intentions. i give president bush credit for saying let's raise standards and make sure everybody's trying to meet them. but because so much was tied to standardized testing , what you saw was teaching to the test. and i can't tell you how many teachers meet who say, you know what? this makes school less interesting for kids, and as a consequence i'm ending up really shrinking my curriculum, what i can do in terms of creativity inside of the classroom. and that's not how you and i, for example, when we thing of our best teachers, we don't think of studying for a bunch of testing to see how we do on the tests.

    >> some people think he can't have a honest conversation about what they're doing right or wrong. can you really say teachers union s aren't slowing the pace of reform ?

    >> i get frustrated when i hear of teacher bashing as evidence of reform . my sister is a former teacher. she now works at the university working with teachers, and i can tell you na that they work so hard. they're pulling money out of their own pockets. and in some of the tougher school districts , they're not just teachers. they're counselors, teachers, disciplinarians because these kids are coming into the schools with so many different problems. what is absolutely true is if we've got a bad teacher, we should be able to train them to get better and if they can't get better, they should be able to get fired. i do think that reform has to be a part of every agenda in the country -- school district in the country because there are some schools that are just underperforming.

    >> and i want to ask you about that because i'm sure you can cytot cite the statistics by heart. the u.s. spends about as much as any other country per pupil. why aren't we getting our money's worth. people are probably wondering what are we spending our money on then?

    >> part of the problem we've got is we've got a very diverse country compared to some of the smaller countries where all the kids are coming to school pretty well prepared. they're not hungry, they're not poor. in our country, you know, we've got poor kids and some kids who have deep troubles at home and that affects performance, but there's no doubt we can step up o your game. so what i've proposed moving forward, building off of the race to the top , let's hire new math and science teachers who are trained in math and science without being thrown in the classroom without the preparation they need. focus on early childhood education . part of our race to the top is let's figure out what are the dropout factories out there. some schools are really underperforming. let's transform those schools. and in all these situations what we have to do is combine creativity and evidence-based approaches. so let's not use ideology. let's figure out what works and combine that with resources . and this is a big argument and big difference that i've got with governor romney in this election. they talk a good game about reform , but when you actually look at budgets, they're talking about slashing our investment education by 20, 25%. we've already seen 300,000 teachers that have been fired across the country, and as a consequence class sizes have gone up by 5%. and when you talk with a teacher -- i was meeting with a couple of teachers in las vegas -- they said they've got 42 kids in a class, some of them sitting on floor. it takes a couple of weeks to where they try to redistribute to get it down to 35, 36, 38. that has an impact on kids learning. so reform is important and resources are important, and you can't be for one but not be for the other.

    >> let me ask you about no child left behind . the administration has granted waivers to states because congress hasn't amended the law. allows them to have not as rigorous standards. something caught my eye absolutely and i'm glad it caught yours too. because of those waivers in some states, some states are permitted to have different proficiency standards by race. in other words, in the state of maryland , african-americans are only expected to reach a certain level of proficiency but why students are expected to reach a hire level of proficiency. we have a situation in 2012 where you have african-americans not expected to reach the same proficiency as whites. i just wondered on a gut level, does that bother you?

    >> of course, it bothers me. one of the good things about no child left behind is to say that all kids can learn, white, hispanic, it doesn't matter. but the problem you had is because it was underresourced and because some kids were coming to school -- minority kids were coming to school already behind, the schools were not going to come close to meeting these standards. and so what we've said to schools is you've got to continue to keep the high standards , but we're still going to measure growth. you're not going have a chance do really well with white kids and the black and hispanic kids but you average it out and meet something. we're still going to desegregate that. moving toward the growth model and measuring how a school is doing gives every school the opportunity to improve without labeling them as failures and then not giving them the resources that they need to actually step up.

    >> let's talk about college tuition . i know you've done a lot. you talk a lot about what to do on the aids side. on the cost side tuition is going up by leaps and bounds and will make your jaw drop when you ewe think what a little kid today is going to have to pay in 20 years. in the state of the union , you say, i'm putting you on notice, schools, if you don't do that, e you're going to see your funding drop. has there been any change?

    >> you're right. our first step was to make sure we were providing the aid and grant that were needed so the burden wasn't all falling on kids. we took money out of the pell gram. we said let's cut out the middle men. let's use that to expand the assistance we're providing the kids. so as a consequence the average cost has not gone up as fast as tuition has gone up. but that's not a sustainable model. we're going have to keep tuition down. the biggest problem we've got with tuition, especially public universities is state legislatures have been shifting priorities. you know, they're spending money. and what we've said to state legislatures is you've got to do your part and prioritize this because how well your state does is going to depend on how well your work force is educated. but what we've also seen is schools starting to do something about costs. you know, in some cases it may have to do with tele- education and are there ways kids can get educated without being in a classroom. it may involve changing at the facilities. when you've got country club level workout facilities and dining halls and all that stuff, that costs money. i also tell them when i went to school , we didn't expect to have that. we're looking to find ways to cut costs but ultimately states are going to have to step up. this is also why community colleges are so important because that's a good option for a lot of kids. not everybody's going to need a four-year college degree . everybody's going to need some form of higher education and community college are under utilized resources . we want to provide 2 million more jobs.

    >> what would you advise a schiel senior that had a dream school that would leave them $100,000 in debt or go to another school that would not? should they lower their academic sights for financial reasons?

    >> a couple things i would say. each school is different and some schools have a big ticket retail price but when you factor in the aid that the schools give, it may not cost the kid as much, but if they've got a chance at getting a great education without loading up debt, you know, sometimes that might be the better option. one of the things we want to do is make sure the kids know what it is that it's going to cost them to go to college. so as part of our wall street reform package we set up something called the consumer finance protection bureau which is designed to help consumers on a whole range of things, financial situations, mortgages, credit cards . one of the things they've done is work with schools so kids know before they get -- they get a clear sheet before they sign up for school explaining even if the college tells you, look, don't worry about costs, you'll be able to get the money for your college, a lot of times the kids don't know how much they're going to owe at the end of four years and we're saying you've got to make that information available so the kid can be better consumers and as consequence get the best education possible.

    >> getting back to education for a moment, your supporters and even detractors said what you did to the race to the top had a huge impact, you did that with, i think, less than 1% of the federf federal budget . the question is why not get more?

    >> we're trying to fund this race to the top model. there have been members of congress who have been resis tent. traditionally education aid has been spread around be a formula. if you're a congressman or senator from a particular place, you want to make sure you're getting your fair share , regardless of whether your schools are reforms or not. we're going to keep on pushing because as you point out, we ended up seeing 46 states, even the ones that didn't win the competition, initiate reforms because they were chasing those extra dollar, and what we want to say to school districts and states across the country is each state is different. you know, we're not suggesting all comes from washington. there are some basic standards that everybody should meet and there are certain practices that we know work. we know that -- who are treated like professionals and be creative in the classroom and a good principal who's a leader and you're keeping track of to progress they're making. and when we have good data that shows how you improve schools, it shouldn't be just sitting in a drawer. and the idea between a race to the top is we'll work with you, we're not going to tell you exactly what you want to do but we're going to tell you how it works. if you want extra dollars to immr. ement that, we'll tell you.

    >> before i let you go you got in hot water at home, i heard about, when you let the world know malia got a c on a science test. that got me thinking. have you ever failed a test?

    >> oh, yes.

    >> really?

    >> i was -- i would say i was a mediocre student until i got to college. i goofed off way too much. malia and sasha are so far ahead of me, basically at n all respects. they're basically better people than i was and thayer doing wonderfully. i couldn't be prouder of them. i will say at least at the school they're at, theory getting a lot more homework than i did when i was that age. they seem to be working deep into the night , you know. i didn't study until the night before an exam.

    >> i wondered if malia who's in high school now if she's studied current events and studying this presidential election .

    >> you know, she is studied current events . she's pretty dispassionate about it. she's able to separate out from dad who's at home to the debates going on out there.

    >> are you?

    >> i tell her i want her to think for herself. the best education is one where kids learn how to learn and they learn how to think for themselves, and my entire goal as a parent is the same goal i've got as president, which is to make sure that every child out here is equipped to compete and to be good citizens in an environment that's changing so fast. what you need to be able to do is constantly take in new information, adapt it, analyze it, use it, and i think that and we have all the ingredients we need to succeed in this competitive environment, but it does mean we've got more work do at the local level and hopefully the federal government can be helpful. we can't do it all. we only account for 10% of education funding, but i think we can lever ralk the resources that we have to make sure that schools are making a difference.

    >> mr. president, thank you for your time. really appreciate it.

    >> thank you, i enjoyed it.

Danville real estate, buying danville real estate

We have seen inventory of Danville Real Estate continue to drop consistently since October of 2011 and in addition we have seen buyer activity pick up over the same period. With record low interest rates and many indications that the economy is rebounding in the East Bay many buyers who had been previously been sitting on the sidelines are now actively engaged in finding a home. This has created a ?Perfect Storm? for seller?s in that prices are rising and the time on market is declining.

Top 5 Mistakes To Avoid When Selling Online | Business Computing ...

Most economists in the mainstream tend to agree that, because of the all-encompassing, come-one, come-all nature of the Internet, the web is one of the few legitimate venues to consistently thrive through economic downturn. This is not a fact lost on the average businessperson looking to create a web presence. Millions of newcomers venture into this realm every year, but over 90% will ultimately fail.

Selling products online is not nearly as easy as big-name stores like Amazon and eBay make it look. It?s quite difficult to sell online, primarily because there are so many potential mistakes a person could be making. In this post I cover some of the top mistakes you should try to avoid when selling online.

    1. Targeting the wrong market

In Internet marketing, the ?wrong? market is any market outside of the strictest niche you can possibly find. Obviously this would include marketing too broadly. A person?s natural inclination is to market to whomever, through any medium and forum, hoping that someone sees it. But you must market to the most specific niche.?For instance, even attempting to sell your weight-loss product to the general weight-loss market is a failing formula. What kind of weight-loss product do you have? Low-carb or a specific food-based product? Pick out the narrowest market and never attempt to sell broadly or to the wrong market.

    2. Letting leads dictate the pace of the sale

Whether inducing signups via your main website, social networking pages, email marketing, or through other means, you need to dictate the pace with your leads, not the other way around. In other words, you need to stay on top of your leads, asking the right questions to garner the right information. Transforming leads into legitimate repeat business is the goal. Seek to find specific issues and problems you can address and solve with your leads by acting first. Never make the mistake of allowing your leads to dictate the tone of the exchange.

    3. A Lack of research

When selling online, it?s all about the research you?re willing to put in. Not only do you have to research the product and the specific need for that product, but you also have to thoroughly research your market and your direct?and even indirect?competition. By conducting the proper research, you will learn about your market?s needs and desires. You will understand how your competition is catering to the market. You will learn about pricing and advertising options. Missing out on any research leaves you playing catch-up while others are selling.

    4. Overeager product promotion

In a perfect world, a product would speak for itself. However, we live in a world where the product acting as a solution is something that must be conveyed to a customer. But there is a fine line here. Zealous promotion may lead to shoddy, false product reviews, false claims of effectiveness, and other information that will turn a customer off. Pushing too hard is a huge mistake in marketing. Convey that your product provides a solution to a problem, back up those claims, add a call to action and introduce a sense of urgency, and then back off.

    5. A failure to adapt

The Internet is a living, breathing, evolving medium wherein a product or method well received today may fail tomorrow. Although it?s not on everyone?s top list of mistakes, failing to adapt to the changing market is a great way to collapse a business. When the Internet changes, as in technology or the market or the demand for your product, you have to stay on top of these changes.

Avoiding mistakes in online sales is tricky business. Everyone is going to make mistakes now and again. Your goal should be to ultimately limit your mistakes. Avoid the ones you can and minimize the ones that catch you by surprise.
