It?s an age-old question that will only get more and more intense in the coming year as the Xbox 360 is in full swing and the PS3 and Revolution release. Which is better? What system is right for me? well, I would suggest both, but if you have to choose one or the other then you have to consider a few things.

Price is definitely a big issue. I mean, when?s the last time you didn?t even bat an eye when are buying something 500 bucks or more? The bottom line: Computer gaming is more expensive. Why? because computers aren?t made just for games. They are calculators, word processors, Internet navigators, music players, movie watchers, and photo editors. They are much more than a gaming machine. Consoles, on the other hand, generally aren?t. It?s only recently that consoles have gone online starting with the Dreamcast and I haven?t seen anyone printing off spreadsheets or book reports from one yet. Consoles are purely for gaming and run between 100-500 bucks. PCs on the other hand are much more than a gaming machine and run between 1,500-3,000 dollars and need to be upgraded every now and again to play the newest and greatest games.

Genre is an issue. if you are a Real Time Strategy fan and only have a console, I mourn for you. and if you are a platformer fan, then computer gaming will be a sad mistake. Genre makes a big deal because of the controller vs. keyboard/mouse issue. different games play much better on the different configurations. Computer gaming is best for Real Time Strategy (RTS) games, first Person Shooters (FPS), Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORG), Flight Simulation games, and Point and Click Adventure games. The consoles on the other hand are better for Fighting games, Action/Adventure games, Platformers, Role Playing Games (RPG), and Sports games.

Tech savvy can possibly be an issue. Computers are a little more unstable than consoles. I mean, when?s the last time you saw a Playstation lock up or get a blue screen of death? Never, right? The same thing comes in here. some computer games might be a little stubborn to set up the way your computer likes it or your computer might not meet the system requirements. Consoles, on the other hand, don?t have that problem. The people designing the games have to fit the requirements of the console so that you don?t have a problem. if you have a basic knowledge of computers, you?ll be fine. if you don?t, then a console might be better for you.

So as I?ve explained, if you want more than a gaming system for school and work or you just like gaming genres like RTS and MMORG games, I would go with a PC. if you love platformers, Action/Adventure, or Sports games or your wallet is a tad on the empty side, I?d go with a console. it won?t be able to surf the Internet or help you with anything else, but it?ll play some great games.

If you want a console by the end of this article, then you have 3 options at the moment. You could buy a Gamecube if you like innovation, buy a Xbox if you like the best graphics and FPS games, or buy a PS2 if you want a huge library of games or love fighting games, Action/Adventure games, platformers, and RPG games. You also have another option. You could wait until the Xbox 360 comes out this month and get that or wait until the Nintendo Revolution and PS3 come out next year.

I have really enjoyed reading the Chapel Hill low back pain blog.? My husband was the first to read the blog and he was actually reading about caffeine.? However, he told me that there were so many different articles that he thought I might enjoy.? Since I run a?lot, I have been reading about barefoot running and plantar fascitis.? Someone had asked him to talk about stretches for the foot which I am also very interested in.? I assume that he probably will as he updates his blog at least weekly.? 1. As a lawyer, how important is protecting intellectual properties?

Well, it may not be important to all lawyers in all parts of the practice and in all jurisdictions. Many other lawyers practice in such narrow areas of specialty, and/or in such unrelated fields, that intellectual property (I.P.) issues seldom if ever come up for them. Yet for a music and entertainment lawyer like myself, intellectual property protection is an everyday, life-time concern and a regular challenge.

In theory, every business-owner should have a working knowledge of I.P. After all, one's own business name is a property, usually claimable as a trademark or service mark. So, too, might be a band's name or an artist's name.

Clearly anyone in the field of entertainment needs to have a working knowledge of intellectual property - and with respect to their own original material, they need to be vigilant in regards to protecting it. The primary areas that need to be mastered in these respects, are the I.P. areas of copyright and trademark. A good starting-point is the U.S. Copyright Office (USCO) website, to the extent an artist may not already be familiar with it. I first learned about copyright by writing to the USCO and requesting their written materials by mail. This was in the days before the Internet happened.

2. What is it like working with TV actors and musicians?

I love doing it, but for me it is business as usual. My father is an actor who started his career as a child actor in the 1940's. I grew up on tour with my Dad and my Mom while one or both of them were working on summer-stock or other performances.

I played guitar in a rock-and-roll band in high school with a piano-player named John ("Jojo") Hermann, who then became Widespread Panic's keyboard player. I played guitar in a rock-and-roll band in college with Tom Morello, who then became the guitar player for Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave, and Street Sweeper Social Club, not to mention his work as The Nightwatchman. I still play rock music with members of my college band, in what little free time I have these days.

The majority of my friends are in the arts or entertainment in some way. So, it's more than working with actors and musicians. I live with actors and musicians, and in some cases I'm related to them.

3. How does it feel to be the force behind so many forms of media?

I would never say that, because I'm not the talent in the performance or recording. Maybe my clients are, if their work gets heard or seen in any individual case. I think if there is a "force" behind all of it, it's something more akin to divine inspiration - that moment when the creativity runs right through the artist as template or conduit. Artists are original but are also a product of their life experiences, and what they have already seen and heard. The "force" of artistic creativity is a lot bigger than any one of us.

That said, I think an entertainment lawyer has to have a respect of, and also a distance from, the art form. If you lose your objectivity you can't effectively represent someone. The Hippocratic Oath of doctors is something like, "First Rule, Do No Harm". Something like that is also true for an entertainment lawyer. While the first and foremost rule is to protect the client while following the law, one special corollary for entertainment lawyers should be "Don't Impair The Art Form". In other words, don't ever substitute your own notion of artistic judgment, for that of the artist - at least not when you're working, that is. Know that the art is bigger than you.

In this respect, my clients are the force. They teach me what art really is. Every day.

4. Can you tell us a little about your early life and what led up to being an entertainment lawyer?

I grew up in a show business family, as did many other kids I knew in 1960's Manhattan. I grew up in mid-town. I always ran into celebrities, and always recognized them when I saw them - from the newspaper or my old black-and-white television. My neighbors growing up were Walt "Clyde" Frazier, Jack Dempsey, Rusty Staub, Jake LaMotta, Ken Boswell, Jim Fregosi, and Dave Marshall. I played sports at an early age. I played music at an early age. Performances are what people did, and attended, in Manhattan, and still do. I've worked in other areas of commerce, with other forms of businesses, too, but I always considered entertainment the family business - much like a boy who grew up in his father's auto-shop might be more likely to become a mechanic later on, once grown up.

The main question to me was whether I was going to be a performer, as in a baseball player or rock musician - or alternatively, work in the businesses related to those performances. By the time I made that decision, I had already lived through life on the road, and life between casting calls - not to mention with a thrown-out pitching arm and fear of tinnitus. I didn't want to spend an unspecified amount of further time lifting P.A. stacks into and out of unmarked vans, or let the gigs take any more of a physical toll on me. I was thinking long-term. I was reasonably sure that as an entertainment lawyer I could stay as close as I wanted to, to the art forms that meant something to me. I was right.

5. What other lawyers inspire you?

Any lawyer that selflessly works on causes and gives back to the community. I have worked on environmental causes in the past, and that work is the most draining type of pursuit you can ever imagine. It's all-consuming.

My main inspirations are Phil Hoffman, Esq., who was my mentor when I started in the practice of law at Pryor Cashman in New York in 1987 - as well as my entertainment law professor from UCLA School Of Law, Gary Stiffelman, Esq. What they taught me, I take with me and use, every day of my working life.

6. What advice do you have for aspiring musicians?

Well, I wouldn't want my thoughts in an article misconstrued as legal advice for any specific person in any specific situation. That kind of advice should only be sought and obtained in a one-to-one and private dialogue with counsel.

However, I can summarize the things I might say to aspiring musicians who are friends of mine. The main thing now, in 2012, is not to give up. Collectively, we have just turned the corner, in terms of the American economy, and in terms of the music industry specifically.

Many nay-sayers for the past few years doubted whether new artists could ever make money and support themselves on music ever again. Sure, in some respects it is more difficult to do, post-digital downloading. But the music industry has already re-invented itself. The center of gravity is now performance and touring revenue, and merchandise. Don't fight the new model. Embrace the new model.

Furthermore, there is so much more that artists can do now to promote sales and make themselves known, including social media. And the trend is towards eliminating the middlemen who used to introject themselves into every income-stream. Embrace the new model. Make it your own.

I used to have music friends who were afraid to use cell phones. Now, those same friends are managing their publishing businesses with secure lap-tops while on tour. The main bit of advice to music friends always is, "Empower yourself, control your own destiny, and make sure that you (or your counsel) generate all your own documents". I tend to see artists as in either of one or two groups - "Victims", and "Empowered". The fundamental distinction between the two groups, is that the "Victims" make themselves beholden to other people's documents, whereas the "Empowered" control the drafting of their own documents. With the availability of desktop-publishing since the 1980's, there is no excuse in 2012 for not controlling the drafting of the documents that affect your life or your career. There is no reason to ever blindly sign on to someone else's form. All that does is make more work for the litigators.

7. What is your opinion on the current state of the music industry?

I'm sanguine about it.

The best new feature is the ability of artists to self-distribute, either by sale of CD's on tour at retail, or over the Internet.

The worst new feature also relates to the Internet, though, too - the ability of pirates to poach material digitally, in a matter of milliseconds.

Personally, I am happy that a premium is now placed on artists doing live performances, and more of them. To me, that is what the art form is really about, anyway. There are bands re-grouping after 20 or 25 years of inactivity, and going back out on the road. In a way, it's a shame that current economic realities force them back out on the road when they earlier thought they could comfortably retire on royalties. But the fact of the matter is, it's a good thing that one or two whole new generations of music fans now have an opportunity to see and hear these bands and artists. After all, once these bands and artists are gone, all that may remain are the recordings - and the recordings just aren't the same thing as a live performance, or the meet-and-greet afterwards.

8. What's the hardest part of being involved in the entertainment industry?

Knowing that some talent remains undiscovered... and, these days, seeing a trend towards the replacement of union talent with non-union talent, which is a somewhat-related issue. The just-world-hypothesis tells us that talent and hard work should be rewarded. It often is. But it is not always rewarded. Unfortunately politics and luck sometimes play a part in the reward outcome, too.

That said, the trend towards artist self-distribution might be the panacea. The market, the public, should decide which art they want to pay to hear, see, and experience. The decision should not be force-fed to the public by the same 3 or 5 corporate conglomerates.

So I think generally, the hardest part about being involved in the entertainment industry, is knowing that the continued concentration of economic power therein, in the hands of a few rather than many, prevents a lot of good material from being heard or seen.

My hope is that this changes in my lifetime, and that I get to see it. I am going to continue to fight to make the change happen, too.

A mentor's story ? Marzia Aloisio | Get Mentoring

Marzia Aloisio joined an artisan bakery called The Moody Baker in Alston in 2005 after moving to the North of England from London. In 2010 she and her business partners opened a sister shop in Barnard Castle, County Durham, and Marzia faced the challenge of starting up and running a company from scratch. TOKYO (AP) ? Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes hit his first major league home run to power the Athletics to a 4-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday that earned Oakland a split in the two-game season-opening series at Tokyo Dome.

Cespedes connected for a two-run homer off Seattle reliever Shawn Kelley (0-1) to give Oakland a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Josh Reddick followed with a solo shot off George Sherrill to give the A's a two-run cushion.

Ichiro Suzuki, who was 4 for 5 in Seattle's 3-1 win over Oakland on Wednesday, was hitless in four at-bats Thursday.

Oakland starter Bartolo Colon picked up the win after striking out six and holding the Mariners to one run on three hits over eight innings. Grant Balfour pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

Jonny Gomes completed the scoring in the eighth with a solo homer off reliever Steve Delabar. Seattle scored its lone run on a solo homer by Dustin Smoak in the seventh.

Oakland manager Bob Melvin said Cespedes has been showing steady improvement since joining the Athletics at the beginning of this month.

"He's getting more and more comfortable every day," Melvin said. "The challenges he faces on the field are probably the easiest for him. He's been dropped into a situation that is difficult both on and off the field."

Cespedes signed a $36 million, four-year contract with Oakland on March 3.

The 26-year-old played in Cuba's top league for eight seasons before defecting in 2011. He starred for Cuba in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, hitting .458 with two home runs and five RBIs in six games.

Suzuki was quiet at the plate but excited the crowd of 43,279 in the fifth inning with a fine leaping catch up against the wall in right to take away a base hit from Kurt Suzuki.

MLB and the players' association are using the series to assist rebuilding in Japan following last year's earthquake and tsunami. A group of players and coaches traveled to the disaster zone on Tuesday to conduct a baseball clinic.

"The main reason we came here was because of the tsunami," Melvin said. "I know MLB has been coming every four years, but the tsunami made this trip happen for sure."

The rest of the big league teams start on April 4, when the renamed Miami Marlins open their new ballpark against the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals. In the meantime, the A's and Mariners will resume playing spring training games this weekend before facing each other in Oakland on April 6.

NOTES: The two-game series marked the fourth time MLB has opened the season in Japan. The New York Mets and Chicago Cubs opened in Tokyo in 2000, followed by the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay (2004), and Boston and Oakland (2008). Seattle and Oakland had been scheduled to play at the Tokyo Dome in March 2003, but the series was scrapped because of the threat of war in Iraq. While Americans have more than one way to consume those e-ink verses, those in the old country are largely stuck with Amazon's still-expanding Kindle family or e-reader hardware lacking the clout of a publisher. But Europeans may get the chance to pick up a Nook in the future, following news that Barnes & Noble has filed for a new digital company in Germany. Add in the publisher's recent (and slightly bizarre) meet-up in London with app developers and it looks likely that we'll be seeing some European presence from the bookseller in the future -- hopefully with all the associated content already seen on the other side of the Atlantic.

This post is part of Back Up Your Birth Control?s Blog for EC Day of Action.

The theme of this year?s Day of Action is EC=BC, and it?s aimed at combating misinformation about emergency contraceptives.

First, I need to get this out of the way. The ?big deal? misinformation is that emergency contraceptive pills act as abortifacients. This is factually wrong, and I have no tolerance for bullshit today.

Moving on.

The EC misinfo I actually encounter most frequently is some variant of, ?But it?s irresponsible! It will make them sluts!?

It takes a few forms, some of which are actually grounded in fact. However, that fact is generally misapplied.

1 ? Emergency contraception doesn?t protect against sexually transmitted infections. Quite true. Neither do standard oral contraceptive pills. Neither do IUDs, Depo Provera, the Catholic Church?s beloved Natural Family Planning, or anything else that isn?t condoms. While this is an excellent reason why we need more education about sexually transmitted infections as well as reduced stigma and increased access to STI testing, it is not a reason why we don?t need EC. For people inclined to whine and wail about everyone who?s now having ?slutty? condomless sex because they just figure they?ll rely on a morning after pill, the numbers do not support this happening in quantity. In fact, negative stigma toward EC may already be preventing some people (adolescents, in this study) from using it.

2 ? Emergency contraception is less effective than other forms of birth control. Again, true and why we still need access to and knowledge about other forms of contraception. However, it?s not a reason to demonize and dismiss post-coital contraception which is, sort of by definition, the only kind that can be used after the sex has taken place. In a perfect world, of course, one would always be able to see a contraceptive failure coming and just avoid having sex then. But back here in reality, sometimes the sex happens first; the missed pills or broken condom happens second. And when the contraceptive failure has already happened, there is no time when primary BC failure plus EC is less effective than primary BC failure alone.

3 ? But women who are having sex should be using some kind of birth control already. Just like if I budget my money very carefully, I ?should? be able to put some into savings each month. In both cases, shit happens. My car won?t start. I get pneumonia and need to go to the emergency room. Condoms break. Pharmacies mess up prescription refills. IUDs expel.

Among some people, there is a desire to portray people who use emergency contraception as irresponsible and promiscuous (as well as to create a connection between the two descriptors, which there isn?t inherently). Never mind that the data do not support the idea that EC access increases promiscuity.

Some people choose to have sex based on any number of factors that I would not choose for myself (case in point: some people have sex to make babies). And some people do come to regret those choices in the hours or days after making them.

I?m not there myself ? but only because all of my impulsive choices that went against norms of what women ?should? do turned out to be awesome and empowering for me. I?m well aware things could have turned out differently; that doesn?t make those decisions ?stupid.?

Besides, even if every person who took EC should ?know better? beforehand, what good does it do to tell them so after the fucking has already happened? In what sphere of reality does that work? And by what logic does stigmatizing people who rely on emergency contraception, possibly risking keeping the person at a higher risk of unintended pregnancy, do anything besides hurt?

Shame is a bad motivator, and reveling in someone else?s ?irresponsibility? ? whether via outright self-righteousness or concern trolling ? is cruel.

Woman to wed slain French soldier posthumously

PARIS (AP) ? The pregnant girlfriend of a French soldier killed in a dramatic gun rampage will wed her partner posthumously, a family lawyer said Saturday.

Paratrooper Abel Chennouf was shot dead earlier this month at a cash machine in southern France, one of a series of killings blamed on 24-year-old Islamist fanatic Mohamed Merah.

Lawyer Gilbert Collard said that Chennouf's pregnant girlfriend, 21-year-old Caroline Monet, is applying for permission to get married to her late partner at an official ceremony in a few weeks' time.

Such ceremonies are unusual but not unheard of in France, where the law allow posthumous marriages in cases where a fiance dies before the wedding. The law states that such weddings can only be approved by the French president "in grave circumstances."

"I've already had it done twice, for policemen's girlfriends," Collard said in a telephone interview. "It's a really moving ceremony, with an empty chair representing the dead spouse."

Collard said the official request was being sent out Saturday, but that he'd already received the nod from the French president's office.

"There won't be any problems," Collard said, adding that he hopes the ceremony will "let the child have a father."

Liquid-like materials may pave way for new thermoelectric devices

ScienceDaily (Mar. 22, 2012) ? In the continual quest for better thermoelectric materials -- which convert heat into electricity and vice versa -- researchers have identified a liquid-like compound whose properties give it the potential to be even more efficient than traditional thermoelectrics.

Thermoelectric materials have been used to power spacecraft ranging from Apollo to the Curiosity rover now headed for Mars. Recently, however, scientists and engineers have been turning to these materials to use wasted heat -- released from automobiles or industrial machinery, for instance -- as an efficient energy source. They have also proposed using these materials to create more efficient heating systems in electric cars or even as new ways to exploit solar power.

In identifying this new type of thermoelectric material, the researchers studied a material made from copper and selenium. Although it is physically a solid, it exhibits liquid-like behaviors due to the way its copper atoms flow through the selenium's crystal lattice.

"It's like a wet sponge," explains Jeff Snyder, a faculty associate in applied physics and materials science in the Division of Engineering and Applied Science at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and a member of the research team. "If you have a sponge with very fine pores in it, it looks and acts like a solid. But inside, the water molecules are diffusing just as fast as they would if they were a regular liquid. That's how I imagine this material works. It has a solid framework of selenium atoms, but the copper atoms are diffusing around as fast as they would in a liquid."

The research, led by scientists from the Chinese Academy of Science's Shanghai Institute of Ceramics in collaboration with researchers from Brookhaven National Laboratory and the University of Michigan, as well as from Caltech, is described in a paper recently published in the journal Nature Materials.

A thermoelectric material generates electricity when there is a temperature difference between one end of the material and the other. For example, if you place a thermoelectric device right next to a heat source -- say a laptop battery -- then the side closest to the battery will be hotter. The electrons in the hot end will diffuse to the cool end, producing an electric current.

A good thermoelectric material must be good at conducting electricity but bad at conducting heat. If it were good at conducting heat, the heat from the hot end would move to the cool end so fast that the whole material would rapidly reach the same temperature. When that happens, the electrons stop flowing.

One way to improve thermoelectric efficiency, then, is to decrease a material's ability to conduct heat. To that end, researchers have been developing thermoelectric materials with a mix of crystalline and amorphous properties, Snyder says. A crystalline atomic structure allows electrons to flow easily, while an amorphous material, such as glass, has a more irregular atomic structure that hinders heat-carrying vibrations from traveling.

These heat-carrying vibrations travel via two types of waves. The first type is a longitudinal or pressure wave, in which the direction of displacement -- in this case, the jiggling of atoms -- is the same as the direction of the wave. The second type is a transverse wave, in which the direction of displacement is perpendicular to the direction of the wave, like when you shake a jump rope up and down, resulting in waves that travel horizontally along the rope.

In a solid material, a transverse wave travels because there is friction between the atoms, meaning that when one atom vibrates up and down, an adjacent atom moves with it, and the wave propagates. But in a liquid, there is minimal friction between the atoms, and a vibrating atom just slides up and down next to its neighbor. As a result, transverse waves cannot travel inside a liquid. Ocean waves are different because they have an interface between the liquid and the air.

The team found that because heat-carrying vibrations in a liquid can travel only via longitudinal waves, a material with liquid-like properties is less thermally conductive. Therefore, a liquid-like material that's also good at conducting electrically should be more thermoelectrically efficient than traditional amorphous materials, Snyder says.

In the case of the copper-selenium material that the researchers studied, the crystal structure of the selenium helps conduct electricity, while the free-flowing copper atoms behave like a liquid, damping down thermal conductivity. The efficiency of a thermoelectric material is quantified using a number called a "thermoelectric figure of merit." The copper-selenium material has a thermoelectric figure of merit of 1.5 at 1000 degrees Kelvin, one of the highest values in any bulk material, the researchers say.

NASA engineers first used this copper-selenium material roughly 40 years ago for spacecraft design, Snyder says. But its liquid-like properties -- which were not understood at the time -- made it difficult to work with. This new research, he says, has identified and explained why this copper-selenium material has such efficient thermoelectric properties, potentially opening up a whole new class of liquid-like thermoelectric materials for investigation.

"Hopefully, the scientific community now has another strategy to work with when looking for materials with a high thermoelectric figure of merit," Snyder says.

In addition to Snyder, the research group includes Caltech graduate student Tristan Day. The other authors on the Nature Materials paper, titled "Copper ion liquid-like thermoelectrics," are Huili Liu, Xun Shi, Lidong Chen, Fangfang Xu, Linlin Zhang, and Wenqing Zhang of the Chinese Academy of Science's Shanghai Institute of Ceramics; Qiang Li of Brookhaven National Laboratory; and Citrad Uher of the University of Michigan.

Egypt lawmakers, government disagree on IMF loan

CAIRO (AP) ? An International Monetary Fund team was due to leave Cairo Wednesday without securing an agreement over a $3.2 billion loan to help boost the nation's battered economy.

Holding up the deal was political wrangling between the Islamist-dominated parliament and the government, an arm of the ruling military.

Economists say Egypt needs to sign the loan agreement within six months to shore up confidence in an economy hit hard by the effects of political unrest following Hosni Mubarak's ouster last year.

The IMF has made broad political consensus a condition for the loan, but both the country's powerful Muslim Brotherhood and the second most powerful party, Al-Nour, said Wednesday they will not support accepting the loan as long as the government's plan remains vague.

The $3.2 billion dollar loan is about a quarter of what the government says Egypt needs to prop up reserves and external financing in order to avoid an uncontrolled devaluation of the Egyptian currency.

The stand-off leaves Egyptian politicians and officials with just a few months to quibble, since Cairo will eventually have to sign the deal with the IMF, according to the London-based consultancy Capital Economics.

"In the near-term, uncertainty is never a good thing for financial markets," said Neil Shearing, a senior economist at Capital Economics.

"Two months is probably the maximum we can wait," he said. "It's not the case that the deal needs to be signed and delivered and done in two months, but Egypt cannot go for six more months without some kind of assistance."

Egypt elects a new president at the end of May, and the winner is to be announced a month later. Then the military pledges to hand over power, putting a time frame around the contacts over the loan. If the military leaves it all for the new civilian government, the six-month target might not be met.

The chief economist of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, Abdel-Hafez al-Sady, told The Associated Press that the Cabinet has put forth a plan to request the money, but it has not said how Egypt would spend the funds or repay the loan.

On Monday, Al-Sady and other Brotherhood leaders met with the head of the IMF delegation, regional director Masoud Ahmed. The IMF team had meetings with members of parliament on Tuesday and wound up its three-day visit Wednesday.

Finance Minister Mumtaz al-Said told the Al-Ahram daily that the IMF did not object to the government's economic program. He blamed the dispute on the Brotherhood and other parties that want to see the government replaced.

The Brotherhood's party, which controls nearly half of seats in parliament, wants transparency, al-Sady said.

"The Brotherhood does not trust the current government, because ministers are not giving us correct figures," he said.

The party has been in a power struggle with the ruling generals, who took power after Mubarak was forced to step down last year in a popular uprising. The Brotherhood's lawmakers have recently stepped up calls for the current government, appointed by the military, to be fired.

Al-Sady said that the government has promised to review its economic program for the loan, but that so far "we are just hearing words and not seeing action."

Similarly, the head of the ultraconservative Islamic Al-Nour party, which controls 25 percent of seats in parliament, said his party rejects the government's plan and said that corruption under Mubarak persists under the new government.

"All the various committees in parliament have rejected the government's political platform," Emad Abdel-Ghafour told the AP.

The year of political uncertainty and unrest have decimated tourism and driven investors away, and a persistent wave of strikes and protests have badly hit productivity. The government has used foreign currency reserves to protect the local currency from collapse.

The country's net international reserves were down 50 percent year-on-year by the end of December, leaving serious questions about how the country can raise new funds to cover a widening deficit.

Aid packages from the EU, oil-rich Arab Gulf states and elsewhere are contingent on Egypt signing off on the IMF loan.

A newly launched grass roots campaign called "Drop Egypt's Debt" is lobbying for loans taken during Mubarak's era to be written off as "illegitimate debts."

Rare Russian whale tracked to Mexico

Scientists have tracked a critically endangered western gray whale from its native habitat in the chilly Pacific Ocean off Russia for thousands of miles to balmy lagoons off the coast of Mexico ? a first for the rare whales.

Now, the 9-year-old female ? dubbed Varvara, the Russian equivalent of Barbara ? is making her way back up the west coast of North America, and appears to be returning home.

On Friday, Varvara was near the Canadian border, and traveling about 100 miles (160 kilometers) a day.

The whale's incredible journey is generating great interest among researchers, who are able to track Varvara thanks to a satellite tracking tag attached to the massive mammal.

It's thought that only about 130 western gray whales remain on Earth, so scientists are closely monitoring Varvara's behavior. The young whale's trip to Mexico took her to an area frequented by eastern gray whales, cousin to western gray whales, yet far more plentiful. Western gray whales are thought to be a separate population in the western part of the Pacific Ocean, while eastern gray whales stick to the eastern half.

Like their western relatives, eastern gray whales once teetered on the brink of extinction, but have rebounded, their population swelling to about 18,000 animals. The whales travel from Arctic waters down the coast of North America to Mexican waters each year.

It's possible Varvara was breeding with eastern gray whales in the Mexican lagoons, said Bruce Mate, director of the Marine Mammal Institute at Oregon State University. The whale "spent time around three areas where that activity is commonly seen," he said in a statement.

Last year, OSU scientists tracked Flex, a 13-year-old male western gray whale, across the Bering Sea from Russia to North America, but the whale's tag stopped working near Oregon, and it's unknown whether the whale continued south to Mexico.

"Clearly the experience of Varvara, and Flex before her, demonstrates that western gray whales can and do come over to the eastern Pacific," Mate said. "Whether this suggests that they are not a distinct population or that we underestimated their range isn't yet clear."

The whale's tags typically survive for only about 120 days, yet Varvara's is still going strong. Mate said scientists are eagerly watching her progress in hopes they will be able to learn whether she retraces her journey to her home waters near Russia's Sakhalin Island, or takes a different route entirely.

Zayo Group buying AboveNet for $2.2B

NEW YORK (AP) ? Telecommunications company Zayo Group said Monday it will acquire AboveNet Inc. for $2.2 billion. Both companies offer Internet and phone services to companies over fiber-optic networks.

The news sent AboveNet's shares up nearly 14 percent in premarket trading on Monday.

AboveNet's CEO said the combination of the two companies' fiber optics networks will better provide bandwidth services for customers. AboveNet serves government customers and the data-hungry financial, media and health care and Internet industries.

"Over the last five years Zayo has acquired a very impressive set of fiber infrastructure assets," said AboveNet CEO Bill LaPerch. "The combination of AboveNet's and Zayo's assets creates a dense fiber footprint throughout North America and Europe for a bandwidth hungry world."

AboveNet shareholders will receive $84 per share in cash, a 13 percent premium to the stock's closing price on Friday.

AboveNet's shares gained $10.05, or 13.5 percent, to $84.30 in premarket trading Monday. Shares had ranged from $49.79 to $78.07 in the past 12 months.

As part of the deal, private equity firm GTCR will invest in privately-held Zayo Group, based in Louisville, Colo.

White Plains, N.Y.-based AboveNet will have 30 days to solicit other offers.

Dun & Bradstreet temporarily suspends China unit

SHORT HILLS, N.J. (AP) ? Dun & Bradstreet Corp. says it has temporarily suspended operations at its Chinese division pending the outcome of an investigation into alleged privacy violations.

The business information provider said late Sunday that the allegations assert that data collection practices at Shanghai Roadway D&B Marketing Services Co Ltd. may violate local Chinese consumer data privacy laws.

Dun & Bradstreet says that it is also reviewing claims that Shanghai Roadway workers may have violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and some other laws. The 1977 act allows the Justice Department to levy hefty fines on U.S.-based companies for ill-gotten profits that come from bribing foreign officials.

The Short Hills, N.J., company says it is cooperating with the Chinese investigation and voluntarily reported the allegations to the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Dun & Bradstreet purchased Shanghai Roadway in 2009. Shanghai Roadway had about $23 million in revenue last year.

Dunn& Bradstreet shares closed at $85.72 on Friday, just below its 52-week high of $86.52 set earlier in the week. They have risen 47 percent since hitting a 52-week low of $58.50 in early October.

HARP Program Refinance Changes on March 19, 2012 for ...

The HARP 2.0 refinance program will become widely available to underwater homeowners on Monday March 19, 2012 and is expected to bring mortgage relief to those who are current on their home loan, but have been unable to refinance into today?s historically low mortgage rates because of their negative equity status.

The full implementation of the revamped HARP 2.0 program, which was initially announced by President Obama in late October of 2011, has taken several months to come to fruition.? And while in recent months it has been available on a manual basis and limited to just the homeowner?s current servicer, the series of changes that the computerized version of the program is undergoing this weekend, will dramatically increase the volume and speed of applications processed (think flying 100 people across the ocean versus 100 people swimming across it).

To be eligible for a HARP refinance, you can either use this HARP eligibility calculator with detailed eligibility explanations or follow the general guidelines below:

1. Your loan must be owned or guaranteed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. If you are unsure, you can check both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac?s websites or you can call their toll-free number for confirmation.

2. You must have closed your current loan on or before May 31, 2009.

3. You must not have made a late payment within the past six months and have had no more than one late payment within the past 12 months.

4. Your loan must fall under the current conforming loan limits. If you are unsure, you can find out here: http://themortgagereports.com/loan-limits/

If you met the general guidelines, what?s next?

Zillow?s Director of Mortgages, Erin Lantz, recommends you start by contacting your current loan servicer to see if you are eligible. ?You current servicer should be able to tell you if your loan qualifies for a HARP refinance and can help you apply for it. However, just like a regular mortgage program, it makes sense to shop around and compare rates, fees and lender service levels. So start with your current servicer, but it is also a good idea to check out at least one other lender.?
