Obama meets Georgia leader amid Russia dispute (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama offered encouragement Monday for the former Soviet republic of Georgia's hopes for a preferential trade agreement with the United States, but said the country has a way to go in its economic reforms.

Obama praised visiting Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili and said there is a "possibility" of a free trade agreement that is a top priority for Georgia. Obama said the U.S. will help Georgia strengthen its free market system with high-level dialogue, but did not address when or under what conditions that might expand.

Saakashvili thanked Obama for the possible free trade agreement.

"That's going to attract lots of additional activity to my country," he said.

Later, in a meeting with reporters he said that the White House meeting and Obama's words had great symbolic importance for his country. Though Georgia has recovered in many ways from its 2008 war with Russia, it still suffers from tensions with its much larger neighbor and looks to the United States for support.

Georgia's leverage in asking for trade advantages grew last year, when it quietly dropped objections to Russian membership in the World Trade Organization. Georgia is probably the most hostile toward Moscow of the now-independent nations that were once part of the Soviet Union.

Russian WTO membership was part of Obama's efforts to repair relations with Russia that hit a low point following the Russian invasion of Georgia over a territorial dispute.

Saakashvili told reporters that the Obama administration's so-called reset with Russia had not come at Georgia's expense.

"We have no reason to complain, and today's meeting clearly proved that," he said.

He said and that he believed the improved relations between Washington and Moscow had deterred further Russian aggression.

Sitting with Saakashvili following an Oval Office meeting, Obama said the two discussed the importance of protecting minorities and the rule of law, an apparent reference to alleged political power plays by Saakashvili's party and the recent arrest of journalists and others on allegations of spying for Georgia's rival Russia. But Obama praised Georgia as an example of democracy in the former Soviet region.

Obama said scheduled democratic elections, in which Saakashvili intends to step aside, "will solidify many of the reforms that are taking place."

Critics have accused Saakashvili of trying to engineer constitutional reforms that would allow him to pull strings from offstage, in the manner of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, after he leaves office in 2013. Saakashvili denies it.

Obama appeared to make an oblique reference to that debate by saying that he was "anticipating fair and free elections" and "the formal transfer of power" in Georgia.

Saakashvili, who has been president since 2004, has sought to steer Georgia toward joining the European Union and NATO. He has been credited with economic and anti-corruption reforms, but opponents have accused him of stifling media freedom and sidelining the opposition, and criticized his handling of the disastrous 2008 war with Russia.

Obama did not mention that war, or the underlying dispute, during brief remarks to reporters following Monday's meeting.

Earlier, however, White House press secretary Jay Carney said Obama would reaffirm U.S. support for Georgia's "territorial integrity" within internationally recognized borders. That's a reference to the dispute over a breakaway region of Georgia that prompted the war.

Obama said the two leaders discussed security issues, and he thanked Saakashvili for Georgia's contribution of troops to the war in Afghanistan.

Saakashvili said that Obama pledged to intensify security cooperation and help Georgia improve its self-defense capabilities.

Georgia is looking to Obama for a road map to NATO membership, something Russia opposes.

Saakashvili said that he expected that Georgia would see progress toward membership at NATO's summit in Chicago in May.

British radio's 'Desert Island Discs' turns 70

(AP) ? Margaret Thatcher chose Beethoven, Michael Caine picked Frank Sinatra and boxer George Foreman selected The Beatles' "All You Need is Love."

They are among almost 3,000 guests who have appeared on the radio program "Desert Island Discs," a British broadcasting institution that turned 70 on Sunday.

The show's simple format hasn't changed since 1942: Ask an illustrious or famous figure to choose the eight pieces of music they would take with them to a deserted isle, and talk about what the tracks mean to them. At the end of each program, the guest is sent into imaginary exile, along with their choice of a book, a luxury and one of their eight records.

Almost 3 million listeners tune in each week to the show, which has stranded royalty, prime ministers and movie stars, as well as scientists, poets and philosophers.

Its success is a mark of radio's enduring popularity in the age of the Internet and high definition TV. Host Kirsty Young said its strength lies in the "unique blend of a castaway's life and the music that forms its soundtrack."

"At best it displays the frailties and strengths of the human condition ? how our creativity, grit and humanity can see us through," she said in a BBC radio documentary marking the anniversary.

Young told the Radio Times magazine that scientists made the best guests, because they often had not been interviewed before.

"Politicians are awful, especially when they have the responsibility of office, because they have to be careful," said Young, one of only four hosts the show has had in 70 years.

Still, politicians rarely refuse an invitation to soften their image. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair revealed a love of Spanish guitar music, his successor Gordon Brown enthused about Bach and current leader David Cameron selected Bob Dylan's "Tangled Up in Blue" as his desert island record.

Even a senior member of the British royal family has appeared. Princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth II, was a guest in 1981. Her musical choices included "Rule Britannia" and ? more surprisingly ? "Sixteen Tons" By Tennessee Ernie Ford.

The probing of the castaways is gentle ? a style pioneered by the show's creator and original host Roy Plomley, who plied guests with food and drink at his club before recordings. But the interviews are often revealing and can occasionally make headlines.

There were hundreds of complaints when Lady Diana Mosley, widow of Britain's World War II Fascist leader Oswald Mosley, was a guest in 1989 and offered the view that Hitler "was of course extraordinarily fascinating and clever."

In February 2003, a month before the invasion of Iraq, actor George Clooney accused then U.S. President George W. Bush of manipulating the country into supporting war and said it was Americans' "patriotic duty to question the actions of your government."

Few refuse an invitation, which brings no fee but considerable prestige.

"You're honored to be part of this strange national club," said U.S.-born music broadcaster Paul Gambaccini, a castaway in 2002.

"To be welcomed into something so quintessentially British as 'Desert Island Discs' means I've made it, I'm welcome, I'm home," he told the BBC.

Mick Jagger is one of the best-known holdouts. His Rolling Stones bandmate Charlie Watts said yes, as did ex-Beatle Paul McCartney ? who chose his murdered bandmate John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy" as his desert-island track ? and musicians from Bing Crosby to Alice Cooper.

The most popular musical choice over the decades has been the "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's 9th Symphony, with Mozart the most frequently selected composer. The most popular non-classical piece is Edith Piaf singing "Je Ne Regrette Rien."

The most commonly requested luxury item is a piano. Other choices have been more original.

American novelist Norman Mailer requested "a stick of the very best marijuana," while egocentric entertainment svengali Simon Cowell asked for a mirror ? "because I'd miss me."

Grape seed extract kills head and neck cancer cells, leaves healthy cells unharmed

ScienceDaily (Jan. 27, 2012) ? Nearly 12,000 people will die of head and neck cancer in the United States this year and worldwide cases will exceed half a million.

A study published this week in the journal Carcinogenesis shows that in both cell lines and mouse models, grape seed extract (GSE) kills head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cells, while leaving healthy cells unharmed.

"It's a rather dramatic effect," says Rajesh Agarwal, PhD, investigator at the University of Colorado Cancer Center and professor at the Skaggs School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

It depends in large part, says Agarwal, on a healthy cell's ability to wait out damage.

"Cancer cells are fast-growing cells," Agarwal says. "Not only that, but they are necessarily fast growing. When conditions exist in which they can't grow, they die."

Grape seed extract creates these conditions that are unfavorable to growth. Specifically, the paper shows that grape seed extract both damages cancer cells' DNA (via increased reactive oxygen species) and stops the pathways that allow repair (as seen by decreased levels of the DNA repair molecules Brca1 and Rad51 and DNA repair foci).

"Yet we saw absolutely no toxicity to the mice, themselves," Agarwal says.

Again, the grape seed extract killed the cancer cells but not the healthy cells.

"I think the whole point is that cancer cells have a lot of defective pathways and they are very vulnerable if you target those pathways. The same is not true of healthy cells," Agarwal says.

The Agarwal Lab hopes to move in the direction of clinical trials of grape seed extract, potentially as an addition to second-line therapies that target head and neck squamous cell carcinoma that has failed a first treatment.?

This work was supported by the R01 grants AT003623 from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and CA91883 from the National Cancer Institute, NIH.

Sen. Sessions on Obama, Reid: ???We have no leadership??? (Daily Caller)

Top Democrats have abdicated their leadership role and are ignoring the nation?s budget problems because they?re focused on their 2012 election campaigns, Alabama Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions told The Daily Caller.

?We?re heading towards the most predictable crisis in our history,? said Sessions, the top Republican on the Senate?s budget committee,??and we have no leadership.?

The Democrats will instead use their control of the Senate to make the GOP look bad, Sessions predicted.

?I doubt they?ll propose to raise the capital gains [rate] ? but they?ll talk about it and complain about it, and try to make it look like Gov. [Mitt] Romney did something wrong? by paying his capital-gains taxes properly, he told TheDC.

?They?ve made a calculation that they?ll lay the responsibilities on us to be the [budget] naysayers, the worriers and hand-wringers, and they?ll put on the bright robes of hope and progress,? Sessions warned.

President Barack Obama didn?t address the impending budget disaster in his State of the Union speech, and he?s ignoring it in his re-election campaign, observed Sessions, whose status as part of the GOP minority?prevents him from calling hearings or forcing votes.

Since Obama was inaugurated, Congress has approved $4 trillion worth of economic stimulus via deficit spending. In those three years the accumulated deficit has exceeded $15 trillion, equal to the entire annual value of the U.S. economy.

Economic growth has stalled, the nation?s credit rating has been downgraded, and millions of Baby Boomers have signed up for Social Security and Medicare.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is also refusing to pass a budget, Sessions said, because that would force his members to vote on GOP proposals.

The Democratic Senate hasn?t produced a budget bill for the last three years, ensuring the budgets are assembled without the senators having to vote on amendments.

The leading Democrat on the budget committee, North Dakota Sen. Kent Conrad, has promised that the committee will, in fact, produce a budget for 2012.

But there?s no guarantee that any budget will be debated on the Senate floor, even though some Democratic senators are worried enough about the nation?s finances to push for a budget debate, Sessions explained.

?If Harry Reid really works it hard, he?s proven he can hold his members [in check], and he does not want to have a vote on this,? he said.

The budget-writing process is important, he insisted, because it would ?commit them to a plan for the future for America, and it shows just how much they want to raise taxes [and] increase spending, and how much the debt is going to increase.?

For example, in a Senate floor debate, ?you have 50 hours of full debate, and you can have an unlimited number of amendments, and it allows the minority party to bring forth their ideas [about] how to fix the nation,? he said.

The Democrats are avoiding budgetary issues because their political priorities are too unpopular to pass, he added. ?I think they know their [Senate] majority is endangered if they advocate openly and publicly and on the record, for items [they favor] that raise the debt and raise spending.?

The president also ignored the impending disaster in his Jan. 24 State of the Union speech, Sessions said.

?Every issue where he had a serious disagreement [with the public], he had some language saying he agreed with the American people, but then he would go on to stick by his regulatory and other [spending] plans? It was a craftily crafted speech,? Sessions quipped.

The Democrats? strategy of obfuscation is hard to understand, Sessions told TheDC. ?I can?t imagine it would be successful, because there was great momentum in the last election for a confrontation with our surging debt.?

In the October election, he added, ?the big spenders took a shellacking, I thought the administration and the Democratic Senate would respond to that.?

But the Democrats, he claimed, haven?t risen to the occasion.

This year, ?it appears their political strategy is that they?re going to talk about hope and not talk about realities. ? That is a deep failure of leadership.?

Why Religion Makes Only Some of Us Happy (LiveScience.com)

Religious people tend to feel better about themselves and their lives, but a new study finds that this benefit may only hold in places where everyone else is religious, too.

According to the new study of almost 200,000 people in 11 European countries, people who are religious have higher self-esteem and better psychological adjustment than the non-religious only in countries where belief in religion is common. In more secular societies, the religious and the non-religious are equally well-off.?

"The results suggest that religiosity, albeit a potent force, confers benefits by riding on cultural values," study researcher Jochen Gebauer of Humboldt University in Berlin and colleagues wrote online Jan. 5 in the journal Psychological Science.

Many studies have shown benefits to religion, from an increase in self-control to greater happiness among the faithful. But where these benefits come from is still an open question. It could be something related to religion or religious teachings; alternatively, the social side of religion might play a role. For example, a December 2010 study published in the journal American Sociological Review found that it's the social networks fostered by attending religious services that make religious people more satisfied with their lives.

Gebauer and colleagues wanted to know if larger cultural forces contribute to the well-being of spiritual sorts. They turned to eDarling, the European version of dating websites like eHarmony or Match.com.

Users of eDarling answer a question in their profiles about how important religion is to them; while setting up their profiles, they also complete psychological surveys asking them how "calm," "cheerful" and "content" they feel, among other measures of happiness, life satisfaction and self-esteem.

Using information from 187,957 daters, the researchers compared each individual's spirituality and happiness against the backdrop of religiosity in each person's country. (Data on countrywide religiosity came from eDarling and from the Gallup World Poll.) They found that religion did indeed contribute to happiness, but only in cultures where religion is celebrated. For example, a believer gets a happiness boost in Turkey, where religion is part of the fabric of daily life and taking part means you're doing the "right" thing in your culture. But that same person wouldn't see any benefit in Sweden, where few people care much about religion.

The study isn't focused on any specific religious denomination, but on religious feelings in general, the researchers wrote on their eDarling research blog. Nonetheless, the findings suggest that research on religion and happiness in the United States ? where religion is relatively important compared with many other nations ? may not apply across all cultures.

Macworld Enters 3rd Year Post-Apple; Is it Still Relevant? (Mashable)

The annual Macworld exposition begins on Thursday in San Francisco, and for the twenty-eighth consecutive year will bring together Apple fans, users and developers. But this installment adds a new twist -- and a new name. It's now billed as Macworld | iWorld, which better captures "the essence of what a mobile lifestyle is," according to event general manager Paul Kent.

[More from Mashable: iPhone 5 Will Have 4-Inch Screen, Launch in Summer [RUMOR]]

As part of that emphasis, this year's convention will include a festival of films exclusively shot on iPhones and how-to sessions about ways to better leverage Apple's mobile-friendly technology. Macworld | iWorld will also feature the traditional assortment of lectures and product demonstrations. Artists and musicians will showcase work created using Apple products. The event runs Thursday through Saturday.

But Macworld | iWorld also faces a challenge: Three years after Apple's final appearance at the event, can it remain relevant to fans and consumers?

[More from Mashable: iPad to Kindle Fire: You?re Irrelevant]

Kent said the showcase is aware of the challenge but believes it still has great utility as a way for fans and consumers to talk to developers, get their hands on new apps, and pick up useful tips and hints in a unique way.

"We answer the question of, 'What do I do now?' after people have walked out of the Apple Store with their new Mac or iPhone or iPad," he said in an interview.

"The tools are so powerful and accessible that you ramp up much differently that you do using Windows or Android," Kent added.

Lost Its Luster?

One longtime Mac developer told Mashable that the event may have lost some of its luster since Apple pulled out, but that it still has significance within the Mac-loving community.

"I think it's still relevant, but whether it's as relevant is hard to judge," said Christopher Allen, who has developed applications for Mac since 1984 and written books for iOS users.

Allen is attending this year's event to do marketing for his new app, Infinite Canvas. He said that Macworld's smaller scale since Apple left -- the event reportedly drew 44,000 attendees in 2007 when Steve Jobs introduced the first iPhone, compared to 22,000 attendees last year -- offers people like himself a set of costs and benefits.

"At its height, Macworld was starting to take on some of the challenges of CES, where it was getting so huge it was hard for a small company to get visibility," he said. "But now that we're a smaller Macworld, it might be a little easier to get the word out."

But Allen added it has become harder to find Apple engineers and evangelists to network and market products with, formerly a major benefit of the show. And smaller attendance numbers also mean fewer sales.

"Before, small developers could basically show up and pay for their booth through sales but now I'm not quite as confident that's possible," he said. "Now it's more of a pure marketing expense for a small developer, although they have made some good strides to improve that, like opening up on Saturday for more consumers to come through."

Still Relevant

Kent and other organizers, meanwhile, remain bullish on the potential and relevance of Macworld -- or, as it's known now, Macworld | iWorld. Mashable got a preview of the event as it was being set up on Wednesday, and it looks to be an "insanely great," to borrow the term, showcase for lovers of Apple products. Its larger relevance in the market, however, will remain to be seen.

"If people recognize this is not a trade show -- it's a lifestyle event -- then it will work for them on so many levels," Kent said. "If we've made the experience of using these products even more pleasurable through education, product discovery, performance and everything else here, then we will have really done our job."

What do you think? Three years after Apple's withdrawal, is Macworld | iWorld still relevant to you? Let us know in the comments

Also, click through the slideshow below to check out Mashable's behind-the-scenes look at what to expect this year at Macworld | iWorld.

Liam Hemsworth Joins Phillip Noyce's Timeless

liam hemsworth timeless movie

We haven?t heard anything about director Phillip Noyce?s time-travel romance, Timeless, since it was announced (back in Fall 2011) that increasingly-popular actor Liam Hemsworth was in negotiations to headline the film.

Jump to the present and we finally have confirmation that not only has Hemsworth officially committed to the project, but that shooting is now slated to begin by July of 2012 ? just a couple of months after the 22-year-old Aussie actor is supposed to begin working alongside Dwayne Johnson on the crime thriller Empire State.

Hemsworth will show up in two hotly-anticipated 2012 movies ? namely, as Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games and as Bill ?The Kid? Timmons in The Expendables 2. In addition to both Empire State and Timeless, Thor/Chris Hemsworth?s younger sibling also remains loosely attached to appear in Arabian Nights, which could still feasibly begin production before the year is done. Suffice it to say, young Liam won?t be in short supply on the big screen, in the foreseeable future.

Timeless will mark a change-in-pace for Hemsworth, seeing how Moviehole (in its scoop on the actor signing on) describes it as a romantic drama that tells the tale of a young widower ? one who is so tormented by ?unresolved issues??between himself and his deceased wife, he actually uses his inheritance to construct a time machine, in order to contact her one more time. Similarly, the film also marks a departure for director Phillips, who likewise specializes in action-thrillers (see: Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, Salt).

Director Phillip Noyce and Angelina Jolie Salt

Phillip Noyce directs Angelina Jolie on the set of 'Salt'

Bill Kelly is responsible for penning Timeless, which seems to sample elements from his previous scripts ? including, the fish-out-of-water (or, rather, time period) plot aspect from Blast from the Past, the fantasy/sci-fi angle from Premonition, and the ?tweaked? fairy tale romance from Enchanted. ?That?s an intriguing mixture of components which could result in a genuinely-passionate fantastical tale of lost love like The Fountain ? or, conversely, something more on the schlocky side, such as? well, Premonition.

Phillips has most recently been directing more character-oriented TV material, including episodes of ABC?s Revenge and HBO?s Luck ? while passing on films that cover (for him) overdone territory, like Hunter Killer. So, in that sense, it sounds like he?s all the more prepped to handle a personal melodrama such as Timeless. Here?s hoping that he can manage to make something worthwhile out of Kelly?s screenplay ? questions about its quality, aside.

-

We will continue to keep you posted on any noteworthy developments concerning Timeless ? including, when it lands an official theatrical release date.

Yahoo delivers another listless performance in 4Q (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Yahoo slipped further behind in the online advertising race during the fourth quarter as the Internet company entered the fourth year of a revenue slump.

The results announced Tuesday marked the latest in a succession of disappointing performances. The persisting malaise led to the firing of Carol Bartz as CEO four months ago.

Yahoo Inc. recently replaced Bartz with PayPal executive Scott Thompson, anointing him as the fourth CEO in less than five years to try to snap the company out of a funk that has depressed its stock. Thompson, who was hired just three weeks ago, promised to move quickly to fix the problems.

"There is no question we need to do better and we will," Thompson assured analysts in a Tuesday conference call.

The company earned $296 million, or 24 cents per share, in the October-to-December period. That is down 5 percent from $312 million, or 24 cents per share, a year earlier.

The earnings matched analysts' estimates, but the company missed Wall Street's revenue target.

Fourth-quarter revenue dropped 13 percent from the previous year to $1.32 billion. After subtracting advertising commissions, Yahoo's revenue totaled $1.17 billion, or $20 million below analyst projections. It's the 13th straight quarter that Yahoo's net revenue has declined from the prior year.

Although Thompson said it was still too early to share precise details about his turnaround strategy, he said he will close some Yahoo services. That could mean layoffs among Yahoo's workforce. The company added 300 employees in the fourth quarter to end the year with 14,000 workers.

Bartz had also closed or sold some of Yahoo's less popular services while jettisoning jobs to cut costs and sharpen the company's focus. Those moves, though, didn't increase Yahoo's revenue or stock price, leading Yahoo to fire her in September with more than 15 months left on her contract.

Besides closing services, Thompson said Yahoo will expand into some fields where he sees opportunities to make money. He didn't elaborate on that or on which services to close.

Thompson also pledged to develop more innovative products to keep Yahoo's audience of 700 million users on its websites for longer periods. Accomplishing that could make Yahoo more attractive to online advertisers. Thompson said he hopes to harness the data that Yahoo collects about its audience to help advertisers do a better job of putting their marketing messages in front of the people most likely to buy their products.

"I'll always ask a lot of questions and I'll immerse myself in the details but when it comes to making decisions, I make them quickly and then push to move fast, fast, fast," Thompson said.

But Yahoo isn't promising a quick start under Thompson's leadership. Yahoo predicted its net revenue in the current quarter will range from $1.02 billion to $1.1 billion. The mid-point of that target works out to $1.06 billion, unchanged from last year's first quarter.

Investors appear to be taking a wait-and-see attitude with Thompson. Yahoo's stock shed 15 cents to $15.54 in extended trading after the report came out. The stock price has fallen by about 40 percent from five years ago.

Yahoo's downturn in revenue has occurred as advertisers are shifting more of their budgets to the Internet as people spend more of their time on the Web. The biggest beneficiaries of this boom so far have been Internet search leader Google Inc. and Facebook, the owner of the largest online social network.

While Yahoo continued to struggle during the final three months of last year, Google's revenue rose 25 percent from the same period in 2010. As a privately held company, Facebook doesn't disclose its financial results, but data compiled by independent research firms show that its website has been luring advertisers away from Yahoo.

Google has become so dominant in Internet search that Yahoo teamed up with another rival, Microsoft Corp., in an effort to become more competitive and save money. Yahoo's search engine now relies on Microsoft's technology to handle most requests. The alliance, forged in mid-2009, hasn't generated as much revenue so far as Yahoo had hoped, although there were signs of progress in the fourth quarter.

Net revenue from search totaled $376 million in the fourth quarter, a 3 percent decrease from a year earlier. The company, which is based in Sunnyvale, Calif., had been suffering year-over-year declines of more than 10 percent in previous quarters.

As it tries to boost its revenue and lift its stock price, Yahoo is considering selling its stakes in China's Alibaba Group and Yahoo Japan. Yahoo is pursuing those negotiations with "great enthusiasm," according to Tim Morse, the company's chief financial officer. Neither Morse nor Thompson elaborated on when a deal might be reached.

Lawmaker: Closing Strait of Hormuz is Iran's right (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? A senior Iranian lawmaker says his country has the right to shutter the strategic Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for oil sanctions on Tehran.

The remarks by Heshmatollah Falahapisheh came as EU nations on Monday agreed in Brussels on an oil embargo against Iran as part of sanctions over the country's controversial nuclear program.

The measure includes an immediate embargo on new contracts for Iranian crude oil and petroleum products while existing ones are allowed to run until July.

Falahapisheh was quoted by the semiofficial Mehr news agency as saying that a closure of the strait ? the passageway for one fifth of the world's oil supply ? is an increasing possibility.

Iran has warned repeatedly it would choke off the strait if sanctions affect its oil sales.

Supreme Court: police GPS device on car is a search (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The Supreme Court for the first time ruled on Monday that police use of a GPS device to monitor a suspect's vehicle was a search and protected by constitutional privacy rights, a test case involving new surveillance technology.

The high court's ruling was a defeat for the Obama administration, which defended the use of global positioning system devices without a warrant and without a person's knowledge as a legal way to monitor a vehicle on public streets.

The court unanimously held that the government's attachment of the GPS device to a vehicle and its use of that device to monitor the vehicle's movement was a search and was covered by constitutional protections unreasonable searches and seizures of evidence.

Megaupload Shutdown Inspires Hack Attack

Anonymous takes down websites for Department of Justice, Universal Music Group.
By Gil Kaufman

Shortly after federal officials took action against the file-sharing Megaupload site on Thursday, the hacktivist group Anonymous launched a series of online actions to protest the shutdown.

In what experts are calling the largest series of hack attacks in history, the faceless global organization of Internet activists claimed responsibility for taking down the websites of the U.S. Department of Justice and the world's biggest record label, Universal Music Group, along with the sites for the Recording Industry Association of America, the Motion Picture Association of America, the U.S. Copyright Office and the Utah Chiefs of Police Association. The organization also threatened a similar action against the FBI's website.

At press time, the Universal and Utah Chiefs sites appeared to still be down, while the others had restored service. The MPAA issued a statement on Thursday about the hack. "Our website and many others, including the Department of Justice, were attacked today and the hacker group Anonymous is claiming responsibility for the attacks," it read. "We are working with law enforcement authorities to identify those responsible. Unfortunately, some groups believe that speech or ideas that they disagree with should be silenced. This could not be more wrong. No matter the point of view, everyone has a right to be heard. The motion picture and television industry has always been a strong supporter of free speech. We strongly condemn any attempts to silence any groups or individuals ... protecting copyrights and protecting free speech go hand in hand."

In response to the takedowns, the Twitter feed associated with Anonymous posted the group's manifesto: "We are Anonymous, We are legion, We never forgive, We never forget, Expect us." In a later communiqué, the group wrote, "The government takes down Megaupload? 15 minutes later Anonymous takes down government & record label sites."

The action came after the U.S. Department of Justice shut down the content-sharing site and charged its founder and several employees with copyright infringement and multiple racketeering charges. A federal indictment alleges that Megaupload, which allows users to transfer large files, has generated more than $175 million in criminal proceeds and costs copyright-holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated movies, albums and other materials.

Swizz Beatz, Megaupload's CEO, was not charged in the indictment, and as of press time it was still unclear how the producer/rapper's involvement with the company will play into the case.

Four company executives were arrested in New Zealand by that country's authorities on Friday (January 20) morning, including Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, 37. In addition to more than $8 million seized from financial institutions, the police seized several luxury cars from the group during a raid on 10 properties.

Though the raid and arrests came one day after a massive online protest against SOPA/PIPA, the proposed Congressional legislation aimed at curbing online piracy, an FBI official told Reuters that the two events were unrelated.

"The FBI contacted New Zealand Police in early 2011 with a request to assist with their investigation into the Mega Conspiracy," said Detective Inspector Grant Wormald from the Organised and Financial Crime Agency of New Zealand.

Editor's note: Viacom, the home of MTV Networks, continues to be in support of SOPA.

We're two games away from learning which teams will clash in the Super Bowl on February 5.

Or, should we say, we're one game away from learning who will take on the Patriots, considering THG's scientific breakdown of their matchup against the Ravens makes it clear that New England will come out on top.

So, let's see who the Pats will battle for the championship, shall we?

Edge: Giants

DRAFT SLOT OF STARTING QUARTERBACK:

Rock Hall of Fame opens archives to public (AP)

CLEVELAND ? The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum opened its new library and archives to the public on Tuesday to give scholars and fans access to the stories behind the music through such "artifacts" as personal letters from Madonna and Aretha Franklin and 1981-82 video of the Rolling Stones tour.

The collection, catalogued over the last few years, includes more than 3,500 books, 1,400 audio recordings and 270 videos, and is housed in the new four-story, $12 million building.

Thousands more books and recordings and hundreds of videos will be added as previously stored items and new donations are catalogued, said Andy Leach, director of the library and archives.

"We hope to serve music scholars, teachers, students and the general public," Leach said. "We hope to see all of them here."

Tuesday's opening of the building on the Cuyahoga Community College campus in Cleveland, not far from the Rock Hall, occurred without a lot of fanfare. The low-key opening allows the public to enjoy the library before a grand opening April 9. The college funded the building, which the library and archives share with the college's Center for Creative Arts. The Rock Hall financed construction and furnishings of the interior of its section of the building.

The library also offers photos, albums and covers, oral histories and scrap books.

Leach said the Rock Hall has done a great job of telling the story of rock `n' roll. He said he sees the library as bringing the museum more recognition and showing "it to be a serious place of research."

The library collection also includes movie posters, photos and memorabilia related to Alan Freed, the DJ credited with coining the phrase rock `n' roll; a handwritten list by Elvis Presley of songs included in one of his concerts; and personal letters from artists including Mick Jagger.

Visitors will not be allowed to check out items, but anyone can use the library reading room to browse through books, listen to audio recordings and watch videos. A smaller archives reading room allows supervised access to certain items.

Steve Waksman, an associate professor of music and American studies at Smith College in Massachusetts, did research at the library prior to its opening for his book on the history of American live music.

"It was very useful, with material that I haven't found anywhere else," Waksman said Tuesday. "They had a lot of material regarding the stage sets of music performers from the `60s and the `70s, such as David Bowie and the Rolling Stones."

Elizabeth Papp Taylor, 53, of Shaker Heights, was at the library opening day.

"I'm looking forward to coming back for a look at the archives, but my first visit was exciting," she said in a phone interview. "It's very impressive."

Money man in U.S. online poker case admits fraud (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? A man accused of processing payments to help online poker websites avoid U.S. gambling laws pleaded guilty on Tuesday to fraud charges.

Ira Rubin, 53, had been charged by federal prosecutors in April as part of a broad crackdown on Internet gambling in the United States, where it has been illegal since 2006.

The owners of the largest online poker companies operating in the United States were also charged as part of the probe, and the domain names Absolute Poker, Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars were seized.

Rubin pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Manhattan federal court to one count of breaking U.S. laws against Internet gambling and one count each of conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud and to participating in a money laundering conspiracy.

He admitted to being a so-called payment processor for the poker operators, who set up fake companies to deceive U.S. banks into transferring gambling proceeds.

"So, the money came from unlawful Internet gambling," asked U.S. Magistrate Judge Gabriel Gorenstein.

"Yes, your honor," said Rubin, who was dressed in beige prison garb.

U.S. prosecutors recommended an 18-to-24-month prison term, much less than the 30-year maximum sentence one of the charges carries. Rubin is scheduled for sentencing by U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who oversees the overall case, on May 17.

Absolute Poker co-owner Brent Beckley also pleaded guilty last month to similar charges.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Arlo Devlin-Brown told the judge on Tuesday that Rubin had helped transfer tens of millions of dollars of illegal Internet gambling proceeds to accounts belonging to the three poker companies.

The government said Rubin lived in Costa Rica for years to avoid a telemarketing fraud charge.

Lawmakers have tried in the past to pass legislation legalizing Internet gambling, which could generate billions of dollars in annual tax revenue.

The case is USA v Tzvetkoff et al, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 10-00336.
